An atheist loves a good steak or pork chops/ fried chicken as well as does a christian.(by the was a muslim will get down on a mess of scrabled eggs, ham and beacon also if no other muslims are around).
Atheist just doesn't beleive in the reality of God. But most atheist do beleive animals should not be killed just to hang on a wall.
This reminds me of a story ; The Christian was getting on the 4 year old for flushing a kitten down the toilet telling him he would go to hell for that. The 4 year old was staring at a stuffed deer's butt on the 36 year old's wall and wondering what part of hell he was going to and would he meet him there. And would he bring mom.:):).
Theist who make up the majority of the population have far more acts of cruility to animals than does atheist. If anything Atheist are much more respectful of animal rights a syou said.
Scientist who study using animals as test subjects are also more respective of animal rights that the religious. Most scientist conduct these test with saving human lives in mind. Most deer mountedon the wall are there (were killed) just for the
antler rack). Big hunting clubs which offer trips usually go for the biggest antler set. Christians (or other religious sects) ,. are usually the ones with stuffed animals on the wall. Those good ole baptist boys use the term "feed ma family" to slaughter thousands of animals just for the rack, although many do eat the meat.

I think it depends on the individual in all cases.
Some theists believe that abortions are wrong, and yet there are those who will have one. (perhaps it is the same for atheists)
I think that you will find many animal rights advocates on both sides of the fence, as well as those who don't put a high value on life, animal or human.
Personally, I do not believe in abortion (for all the biblical reasons) and I do not deliberately hurt animals, try to avoid hitting them on the road. But, if the choice came to human or animal --- human life would win out for me every time.

Christians seem to be less in favor of animal rights, probably because of an egotism that blinds them to the fact that they are more or less naked noisy apes themselves.
Christians also tend to be against abortion, for several reasons, mostly I think because they're told they should be against it (contrary to Judaism, which regards an embryo as a collection of cells, which are part of the woman's body). Abortion is also an easy target on which Christians can aim their self-righteous arrows -- much easier than adopting unwanted children, donating time and money to charities, visiting lonely strangers in prison (as Jesus told them to do, by the way), actually trying to help *living people* who have already been born.

Athiests are more apt to look at the big picture and how mankind as a species fits into the whole ecosystem. Theists, in contrast are told in their "holy scripture" that man is the master of all beasts and are given explicit permission to exploit them.

I think that atheists believe in animal rights more then theists, except for the Hindu, and that theists believe more in fetal rights. I think the answer lies in the belief of the soul.

I'm an atheist who is pro-kitty and down-baby. I guess I fit your stereotype! But perhaps it's just me.
But I should add that I'm not a peta freak either. I definitely believe that some animals are more equal than others. Obviously, the cute ones rank up there, with bears and sharks wayyyyyy down on the bottom.

How in the hell are we supposed to know? I can only speak for myself not all other Atheists.
When is it going to sink in that regardless of people's beliefs or lack of them we are individuals? If Christians could agree on everything then there wouldn't be 1500 or so different flavors of their religion.

Atheists believe in life without any divine intervention (divine right, mandate from heaven, etc). Thus, rights are paramount in an atheist's belief, the right of choice. From this, there should be animal rights, but not absolute, since animals are a source of food for us. Animals have rights not to be abused, tortured, etc., but we also have the right to kill them for food (cruel? maybe if you want to stay hungry).
For fetal rights, no. Women have the ultimate rights of their own body until the birth of the child outside their bodies. Choice is paramount in any question of rights.

In both cases, this is a humanisitic philosophy, not a religious one. Neither is more or less apt to believe either. Good luck
