ok he needs Obedience training so he learns properly how to walk BESIDE you without pulling - this seems simple enough but obedience classes will help you learn and understand the RIGHT way to teach him (I dont have time enough to tell you now plus its more of a one-one thing...)
anyhow also a HALTI or GENTLE LEADER head halter will help emensely as they cannot pull against these in the same manner as a leash and collar...
NEVER use a choke chain collar - not only can these kill dogs but they dont teach the dog how to walk without pulling - dogs can still pull on choke chains.. repeatedly jerking on the leash DOENST teach them to walk nice

really the best thing is invest in Obedience classes AND a haltie or gentle leader

Pits are pullers. First choose an appropriate collar. Choke collar, or a pinch collar for real hard cases. The dog should not lead he should be next to or slightly behind you . If you let him lead he will pull. Start by (when he pulls) take his collar and put him beside you , be prepared to do this many times. he will eventually figure out what you mean. After that you remind him with a 'snap' of the leash and collar. Don't get stressed out he will pick up on it and also get stressed. Have fun, training your dog is part of the joy of having one. DO not pull back on the leash the more you pull back the more he will pull forward .

OMG! I have the exact same problem. I too have a pit bull/lab mix. They make the prettiest dogs! But anyway, I've found that keeping him on a really, short leash helps as well as jerking it when he gets out of line (not jerking his head, just making short snaps with the leash). My dog is 11months and he still does it some. When I can get him to behave I'll let you know!haha

Oh I have a german Shepherd puppy that did that. I went to petsmart. They have these harnesses there. Oh my they are great! It was $15. I bought a 4 ft leash $5. When they do pull or stop say in a voice like you mean it, no. The harness puts the pressure on his chest. Doesn't hurt him but it has stopped the pulling. The sniffing is just puppy, but teaching him now that it isn't ok is best.

Buy a gentle leader, we use this on our lab/border collie, we have more control over him but it isnt as harsh as a choke chain or muzzle. I highly recommend a leader.\

When he stops for anything other than a potty, I give a gentle pull and say "C'mon Max" and we get moving again.

When he was little if he pulled, I would shorten the leash and make him walk next to me, now he leaves a little slack.

Try the gentle leader or a head halter. They work like a halter on a horse. You have complete control. I have tried several things and it works by far the best. Nothing would stop my Pit Bull from pulling until I started using the gentle leader on him. With it he walks perfectly. I used it with my Lab along with training and now he does not need it any more, walks like a perfect gentlemen.

When my puppy was that old she did that too and the advice i got was to get a harness because it doesnt pull on their neck(which can damage their neck) and it also is easier to hold them back. When you see another dog lead the dog to the other side of you and keep the leash short so she is right beside you. Also taking treats or peices of chicken in your pocket will help but dont always give them to him. show him that you have him and try to teach him to heel everytime he trys to wanted say heal and let him know that your the boss kind of thing.

i have a pitbull lab mix too! he's 5 years old, and he still pulls on the leash if i go without his harness. i have a no-pull harness that i walk him with, and it works. most pet stores have harnesses and head collars that help with pulling. or try training classes, they work too. if you're anywhere near a petsmart, they have training classes and the trainer is usually there in the store to help customers with training purchases. it will take alot of work, though, because the breed of dog is STUBBORN. good luck!

Get a leash called BeHave, It goes around the muzzle and is entirely humane. They fight the leash and not you. This way they can learn to enjoy the walk without your shoulder being pulled out of socket.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/H6FOU

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
