My first cousin recently committed suicide. This led to a conversation between my sister and I who is 10 years older than me. We both found that we had had suicidal thoughts at one time or another in our lives. I would never actually go through with it, and neither would she. But there have been times that I have wanted to not live anymore. Is this normal? Do most people feel this way at one time or another? Serious answers only please. Thanks.

I myself sometimes think if it is also normal for me to even think of suicide. But what makes me wonder is, why do I think of it right after unwanted circumstances happen to me? Something that I think will really put me into shame? Something that will alter other people's perception of me because of a bad scenario that involved me? Why on that instance only?

I suppose suicidal tendencies occur when we feel we can no longer manage the situation we got ourselves in, fearing that as soon as everything gets out of hand, we're in a total mess. And being in a total mess means we will no longer be able to stand with our heads high because of humiliation.

I guess it is safe to say that at times, suicidal thoughts come into play when our imagination simply precedes the worst of situations that could happen to us, when in fact, for a simple mistake, the dent it will cause in our spirit is not even enough to destroy our whole being. We are only put in such a compromising situation because we assume too early of the probabilities of a negative circumstance getting blown out of proportion.

When in reality, it could only be just a tiny glitch that is really bound to happen. Something that should make us learn due to a mistake.

Sometimes, when we are bombarded with problems, and we feel we have no one to talk to, self-pity starts to sink in, consequently reinforcing negative thinking in ourselves, and this deters our ability to see the circumstance in a different angle.

Then when we can no longer think clearly, when we think there is no more other alternative or solutions to problems, that's the time we think of committing suicide in the hopes that when we slowly die, that death resolves the conflict as well.

Suicide could only be for those who have been cowarded by the circumstances that made them feel problems are bigger than them.

Life's situations may sometimes be too overwhelming for us and for our senses to bear but the moment we take control of that situation, the moment we decide to think clearly, little by little, suicidal tendencies can be arrested by possible alternatives that will provide solution to such challenges.

I imagine what it would be like to commit suicide. I think it is normal to at least think about it, about the act itself, its implications, your own death and what it might mean...but I've never considered actually going through with it.

I consider myself to be fairly stable mentally and psychically. I have a good life, but I think it's a fairly normal consideration, provided that you're not thinking about it with any intent or doing it to often.

No, I don't think "normal" human beings have thoughts of suicide. That said, define "normal."

I can't even comprehend the thought of suicide, from my own perspective or someone else's. What a selfish, asinine way to think. No matter how much you sit in the corner and cry, many people have it much worse off than you.

Perhaps we should ship you off to India to live in poverty and drink the same water you defecate in? Then you'll see how life is not worth living, how the people there STILL go on and cling to life despite their hardships.

Suicide is such a stupid, ignorant, selfish and dare I say stupid thing to do, think, consider or otherwise discuss.

well if u ask me i wud say that it is as normal as breathing , eating n sleeping. as 4 me i`m one of those who hate the term suicide nalso hate those those who commoitt suicide, b`coz i think it is committed by only those who are weak n cannot face difficulties. so they kill themselves n prove that they had no right to live in this world where darwin`s law of the survival of the fittest is applied till date.
but such ridiculous thoughts do come. and they even did come to me 4 a split of a second wen i was passing through the worst times of my life. they are just normal. so do not worry. man is a social animal. we all just want to escape 4m the cobwebs around us. so ...all the best. its ok if u think of suicide, but... plzz..... plz... never commit suicide.

Some people never have suicidal thoughts. Many people think of it when they are under extreme stress, but only people who suffer from mental or emotional problems consider going through with it.

If this is a feeling you get a lot, you might need to see a psychiatrist, but if it is only once in a while, it is normal. I think most people probably feel this way atleast once in thier life.

I believe we all go through times in our lives that makes us wonder if it's truly worth it. Most people do not progress to the point of making plans, however.

It is perfectly normal. If someone tells you that they have never thought of suicide, they are lying.

I am sorry you lost your cousin =(
