I've only been to Dublin so far but will be going to Cork next week. Most Irish people I know have been recommending to me that I go west. While Dublin is a great place to visit, aside from the few museums and lots of pubs, you can run out of interesting things to do in a few days.

It really depends on what you look for in a holiday experience but if you're looking for natural beauty and things that will be unique to Ireland, the west is the place to go. Kerry, Kilkenny, Cork and Shannon can be launching points for the Ring of Kerry, Blarney Castle and the Cliffs of Moher.

Try going to railtoursireland.com. They have great suggested itineraries from half days to 11 days long.

Belfast is definitely worth seeing. And it is easy enough to get to and from Dublin and Belfast, so my advice would be to base yourself in one of the capitals, and travel from there. :)
