According to Benjamin Franklin they are. He actually was describing why older women make better lovers. He said they were less demanding, more thorough, etc, and besides, "All cats are gray in the dark." Meaning, I guess, that their looks don't count once you are all tucked in under the covers.

From a woman's perspective, good old Ben wasn't much of a looker himself.

You lose your sensitivity to colour in low light levels because your cone cells, which detect colour, only function in bright light. Your rod cells are much more sensitive, and it is these you depend on to see in the dark, albeit with reduced ability to distinguish colours.

However this does not mean cats change colour at night. A blue cat will still be blue, it's just you can't see the blueness.

"Toutes les chats sont grises dans la nuit". My French may not be just right there.

I have found if I get up at night that I can't always identify which cat I see as there color is lost in my vision. Course the orange ones I recognise and I have three tabbies that tend to look the same.

Things only have colour if light refects off them. When it is dark _everything_ looks grey.

They are still their original colour but only darker - cuz there's no light.
