When studying the Bible it helps to have 2-3 different versions availible. I suggest, KJV or NKJV... NIV NASB, and a good study Bible in one of the versions
Quoted from my study guide:
" What are the keys of the kingdom of heaven? Were they given only to Simon Peter? No, Jesus gives them to those who make the same confession made by peter, those who know Christ as Savior. If you are a child of God you have the keys as well as any person has the keys. The keys were a badge of authority of the scribes who interpreted the scriptures to the people( see Neh. 8:2-8) Every Christian today has the Scriptures and, therefore, the keys. If we withhold the Word, we 'bind on earth'; if we give the Word, we "loose on earth." No man, or individual church has the keys -to the exclusion of all other believers. We have the responsibility today to give out the gospel because it is the only thing that can save people. This is a tremendous revelation. .... & and awsome indeed."

The verse says that he will give you the keys to heaven meaning that as part of His church that you will have the power of heaven for your use. However you must believe in that power and command it. The kjv is closer to (... whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Meaning that you have been given the power to lock or unlock what you recieve from God. Your bad words will unlock bad things in your life and as well lock up the the good things. Your good words the opposite. Take your authority that Christ has given you. It's given but you have to receive it, take it.

Peter was given the 3 "keys to the kingdom of heaven," meaning that he had the ability to unlock knowledge about the opportunity to enter the Kingdom of the heavens.
The identification of those keys logically must be based on other scriptural information, which would be a very long conversation that could not fit in this space.
The first key was for opening the way for the Jews. They, as a nation, rejected Jesus. Jesus also made another reference to keys in Luke 11:52, in speaking to the religious leaders.
The 2nd key was to open the way for Samaritans.
The 3rd key was to open the way for Gentiles.
As I said, there is room for much more discussion here, with the use of scriptures.

That is a poor translation. It is talking about the sealing powers of Elijah being given to Peter. Whatever is loosed on earth will be loosed in Heaven and whatever is bound on earth (or sealed) will be bound in Heaven. That means that by the authority of the Priesthood bestowed upon Peter and the apostles, they could seal or bind people, things or events on earth and have Heaven record and seal them there as well.
In modern practice, this Priesthood authority is utilized to seal families together for eternity. Thus, we don't have to marry for mortality only but for all eternity. Likewise, our children can be sealed to us in an eternal family unit guaranteeing our familial relationship throughout eternity.
Some will argue that we are not married in Heaven. True, because this is a mortal ordinance and cannot be performed later. That is why we have vicarious ordinances for our ancestors who did not have the opportunity to have the sealing ordinances while in mortality. Our ancestors wait for us, their mortal descendants to perform the sealing work for them so that they can progress in the Heavenly realms.

I think the King James says, whatever is loosed on earth will be loosed in heaven, whatever is bound on earth will be bound in heaven. I think it means get your accounts straightened out down here--forgive others, get over the past gripes with your family--so you can freely fellowship with them in heaven. However, Romans makes it clear that people will not be bound by marriage in heaven, as illustrated with the widow who had married 7 times.

Each and every one of us that have believed on the name of Jesus Christ for our salvation are possessors of the authority of all heaven. Jesus said that we have the keys of the kingdom. Keys represent authority. I have on my key ring a key that will open every door in this building, because I have authority in this place, I can come and I can go. A door is meant as a barrier but once you possess the key it no longer hinders you. We possess the keys of the kingdom, in other words WE HAVE AUTHORITY. Nothing that the enemy of my soul throws at me will deter me, slow me down, or cause me to give up, because I possess the keys of authority. The power of heaven binds what I bind the power of heaven looses what I loose.

It's to do with the administration of the Church. Jesus is saying that whatever is decided by human church leaders when faced with the situation described in the previous verses, then God will back up that decision in Heaven.
