If you get pulled over for speeding, your license is suspended, and you are in a rental vehicle; Would thay tow the rental vehicle or call the rental place? Anyway, is it even possible to rent a vehicle with a suspended license? The reason i'm asking is because a friend owes me money and supposedly on her way this morning to pay me back, she got pulled over for speeding and the officer is making her call someone to get her and they are towing the vehicle cause she has a suspended license. The vehicle is a rental. Is she telling me the truth?

You need to show a license to rent a car. But the car rental company would not know your right to drive is suspended unless they check (they can, but usually don't).

I have several licenses from different countries where I have homes. My Québec license has a 1-900 telephone number that can be called to find out if it's still valid. But nobody ever has called it. On the other hand, I've never been stopped for speeding or anything else, although somebody I was driving with was and I was (inappropriately) asked for my license as well. She had UK license which the cop accepted -- although legally whether it was legal for her to drive in that state is an open question, since she lives now in another US state but owns no car and has never gotten 'round to getting a license there.

(I'm rarely in the USA. And it seems that only in the USA do people get stopped by cops so often. It must be a money-making thing by the states.)

Sometimes when people think their license may be suspended, they go and get one in another state. Their right to drive will be suspended in the first state, but only if there is a mutual recognition of points and suspension compact between the 2 states will the license be lifted completely.

You ask about towing. I was told years ago by the NY City towing people that when a rental car is towed they tell the rental company right away, and the rental company usually collects the car and charges it to the renter's credit card. Since nobody but the renter (and in NY State the renter's spouse) or somebody listed on the rental agreement can drive it, it usually has to be towed.

I don't know if she is telling you the truth or not, but yes, if you are pulled over and are driving with a suspended license, the vehicle will be towed. Yours, borrowed, or rented.

But I doubt they would let her call someone to get her, I suspect she would be riding in the back seat of the police car to jail.

To answer the other question, you only have to show a license and have a valid credit card to rent a car. If she did rent a car, ask her to take that credit card and go to an ATM to get the cash to pay you back.

Most places will NOT rent a vehicle to some one with a suspended license. Yes, they will tow the vehicle. Is she telling the truth? Ask to see the ticket when she brings you the money she owes you. You may not see either ever again.

They usually run your license to verify that it is not suspended. This is usually included in the cost of rental. It may vary from state to state. If she got pulled over for speeding on a suspended license in a rental car that was not rented by her, she most likely would be sitting in jail over night at the minimum. There are alot of variables, of course, such as the possibility someone else rented the car for her and she somehow got on the contract, but she's probably running game on you. Even if someone else rented the car, she should still be sitting in jail overnight at least.

If you get caught while driving with a suspended license you will go to jail. Your vehicle will likely be impounded. If she is free it is likely there is some untruth in her story because she said the officer made someone call to get her. Then again, maybe the officer let her make it... but in order for the officer to find out her license is suspended your friend's information had to be entered into the police department's database, which means more than one person had to have mercy on your friend in order for her to avoid going to jail when she was caught driving.

It is possible that she got someone else to rent the car for her. Then she would not have shown the rental company her suspended license. If that is the case, you are not the only one she will owe money to.

Could be, most rentals places don't check if your license is good, just the credit card used to pay for the rental.

No, she's a liar. You need to have a valid driving licence to hire a car. I'm pretty sure this is true in the US like it is in the UK. She making up pathetic excuses. Never ever lend money to her again - that's if you ever see her again. How much did you lend her, just out of interest?

Naaa.... it sounds to me like she is yanking your chain. She wasn't on her way to give you the money. The next time she supposedly 'has the money'.. tell her to stay RIGHT WHERE SHE IS... then go get the money from her... don't give her any more room for excuses.
