Only reason I am asking is because I feel totally weird calling her mom, but my husbands other two brothers wives call her mom. I was married before and called my mother-in-law by her first name. I guess I feel like an outsider since I am new to the family.

I would call her by her first name. When you refer to her in conversation you can call her your mother in law but when you're speaking with her face to face just call her by her name. She's not your mom after all....she's his mom. Being in a new family is tough.

My mother-in-law likes to be called mom, but I don't feel comfortable with that and she understands. I think you should call her what you feel comfortable with. Nothing is worse than a forced response, and if she respects you and cares about how you feel, she will understand. Just ask her how she feels, talk it over with her. She will respect you in the end for being honest.

I have this same issue. My husband and I went out for 6 years before we got married and he refused to call my parents Mom & Dad. He always referred to them by their first names. So, I have always called his parents by their first name and it always seems weird. Especially since no matter what I refer to my husband's Dad when talking to his Mom she always seems confused (always asking who?). Now that we are officially married I heard him call my Dad, Dad the other day. I think I am going to start calling them Mom ______ (Last Name) & Dad ______ (Last Name). It's how I always refer to them when they aren't there anyways. I would just go with what you feel comfortable with. Once you start calling them Mom & Dad (or whatever you chose), you will just get used to it after a while.

Be comfortable in the setting. Ask HER if she minds you calling her by her first name...there may come a day when the first name becomes "Mom." But that is a title of honor, and I agree, don't give it away lightly. She will be honored should that day come. Good luck
