I'm a dentist, Jay, and at one point in my career I was at a crossroad. Fortunately, I stayed in general dentistry and am now enjoying life greatly. If you have a compelling interest in another field, you should explore a career change; otherwise, look at ways to modify your present situation and put your energy there. Best of luck to you!

While I have not had these career questions, I like ponyboy's answer. There are so many things you can do within the field of dentistry, just choose what you like and discard the rest. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Jones. I just don't do dentures." When I decided that I don't do molar root canal treatments, my life got better. It's hard to imagine a career where you could make a comparable income, even if you scale back your practice. I play music and take pictures for fun. If I needed to change the balance in my life, I could still "fix teeth" and spend more time on my hobbies and be happy.

Trying to shift the carrier in any other field is a very bad idea. dentists are in great demand now a days and you should try to get a job in a private or Govt. hospital or open your clinic in a city.

Personally, be a dentist that can handle all problems. My daughter needed a tooth extracted and our dentist sent us to another dentist. Then I had to have a root canal, was sent to another one, that one cracked and needs extracting, and now I have to go to a 3rd freaking dentist. My suggestion, be able to do it all and be in network with all dental carriers. Find out the bigger companies around your area and make sure you're within their dental network.
