I have 25 month old twins. One talkes very well and is starting to form small 2 word together. The other twins only has a vocabulary of 7-10 words. He just doesn't want "try" to talk or say different words. Is this common in twins?

Thank you for all your inputs. I do try to treat them as individuals. And to answer one of the questions they both do everything else together, rolling over, crawling, walking etc within a day of each other. I"m just a natural worrier and wanted to hear if from someone other than my husband that i'm worring over nothing. If his speech doesn't improve in say 6-8 months then I will call Early Intervention. Thanks again.

In the case of twins, they usually exhibit normal patterns of speech later than most children. Because twins are quite unique in their duality, they often develop their own language that they alone can understand. When they are ready to communicate with the rest of the world, they will do so. I wouldn't worry at all. At least your son is speaking.
The more you talk with your children, the more they will begin to talk with you. If it really bothers you, discuss it with your pediatrician. But twins usually develop normal speech patterns later than singletons. But it will not prevent them from developing normally like other children.

Even though they are twins, they are still TWO little people. And as you know, every person in this world develops at different rates. I my self am a twin and from talking to my mother, we progressed at different times. I had lots of hair and teeth before my twin did, but I wore diapers a lot longer than my twin becuse I did not potty train as fast as my twin did. So again it depends on the child.

I have twins, they are 29 months old.At first, the boy started to talk very much and the girl didn't even try.I was a bit worried but I was sure that's just a 'period' and will pass. Then I decided to do something. We started to sing together and I was making dialogues with her.I asked her what shoes or what hat she wants. She picked.I asked her is she wanted milk or orange juice and she also answered because she didn't want to miss the 'opportunity' to drink something at dinner. The key is to ask the child which one of 2 things he/she chooses.Don't ask "Do you want",because that means 'yes' or 'no'.Ask "Which one do you want",because that means the one(word!) or the other(word!).And every time change the things which have to be chosen. That's how you will success. Now my daughter talks more than her twin-brother!

Just to add, this happened with my sister and cousin. They were born 6 weeks apart, but raised in the same house until they were 5. My sister didn't start really talking until we moved away. My cousin did all the talking for her. They did a lot of the twin things like special language and such. It was really weird.

Theres always a more quiet twin. Its normal. Plus, he's a boy, and slow communication development is perfectly normal in boys.
I wouldnt worry about it. Since he has a twin he probably just lets the other one do all the communicating for the both of them. Thats also really common in twins.

Yes because the other twin just feels like he doesn't need to talk because he has a partner now to make the twin that doesn't talk veary well talk you have to put him in daycare without the other twin just seperate them so they can talk without the other one talk for him, it worked for my twin sisters because my mom and dad had the same problem well but now there 6 years old and they both talk VEARY well lol but thats how you have to do it. I hope I helped if you use my method it should work!
Good luck!,

Yes!!! I thought my girls were the only ones. One of my girls talks up a storm and the other barley babbles. They have a speech therapist and she works more on my babbler. She says that twins will develop at different rates. Try reading books, name objects and use some two word phrases, he will pick it up. Good Luck!

Mine did this too. I sent the one who wouldn't talk with her aunt for one week, so her twin couldn't talk for her and then when she got back after a couple of days I sent the other twin away for a week. After that she began talking and standing up for herself - before she would let the other boss her around.

I've heard that this can be totally normal with some twins....because one twin becomes the dominant one of the two...Your one twin might be talking too much for the other one...Good luck with them though!!
