This has nothing to do with not teaching your kids, not being a good parent, not being strict enough, and many other reasons.

I know exactly how you feel. When kids get a certain age, they stop listening because these days, they think they already know everything. My kids listened to me until they got into middle school and since then "I know nothing".
Of course, in their eyes, I was never a teenager. But when I was a teenager, we had respect for our parents and listened. Once the kids start 6th grade, they change. Not sure where my kids learned not to respect people, they sure didn't learn it at home.

My sister had this problem and asked me this all the time. Her kids listen to me, yet when she tells them to do something, it's like she isn't even talking. And it's because they don't take you seriously. You are the type of person who either yells all the time and they've learned to tune you out, or you're the type of person who threatens with consequences, but never follows through. My sister is a little of both. I'm not much of a yeller, nor do I have to use alot of consequences. It's been few and far between. Most of the time I just tell them what I expect and they do their best to get it done. I started this at an early age though, my sister has been doing it for about three months and her kids are finally starting to get it. If you are persistent, follow through with your punishment and start talking instead of yelling, they'll come around. Making chore charts also helps with their daily responsibilities. And if it's personal things, such as life experiences, they aren't taking advice in, you just may have to realize that they are the type that has to learn from their own mistakes. It's pretty common in teenagers.

I wish you well mom...and believe me, if this can work for my sister, this can work for anyone....she was always such a pushover when it came to her kids, and was more worried about them not liking her than making them do the right thing. Now, they not only still love her, but they respect her as well.

Join the crowd. It's a known factor - for the most part, kids ignore their parents and listen to their peers. Something I found out the hard way and I'll pass it on - you do NOT know everything about your kids. They will tell you what you want to hear, or what they want you to hear - but they always hold something back. It's worse when they hit their teenage years. I always trusted my kids 100% - man, was I in for a shock!

Usually kids don't listen to parents, not unless they make the "lecture" interesting. My dad always told us some of his mistakes & it'd always lighten the mood. We laughed at/with him, but the stories alwayz stuck with us. As did the lessons. So i'd have to say make it humorous and less tensiony (if that's a word). Specailly when parents start yelling & what not, kids ususally think of other places they'd rather be, or listen to tunes in their head, or something. So, remember make it interesting & they'll remember it for life, or most of it anyways.

Because they are kids. Did you listen when you were a kid? Good luck!

You need to be a lil more strict so they can understand that you are the BOSS. Try was watching Super Nanny on ABC Mondays...check you local listing for times.

Maybe because you're not so close to them. Try to spend more time with your kids and earn their trust.
