Cat D is when an insurance company think the repairs are more than the car is worth. Not all cat D have been in an accident. They may have been stolen, not found for months, insurance paid out, car turns up. The insurance then dispose of it as a class D. There are 4 categories,A B C D. A being the worst. There are many factors involved, but a car that is getting on a bit may end up cat D for nothing more than a broken door lock. Do your research. There are bargains out there.

Don't do it - Category D means it was once written off - the category just tells you how bad the damage was. But the very fact it was written off should warn you against it - obviously it had severe damage at some point, and it's not often that repairs can make cars as good as new... there may be some underlying damage to the chassis etc that you won't know about, which could make it extremely dangerous to drive and not as effective at protecting you should you crash.

I know they're cheaper, but its best to be safe - even if you're the safest driver in the world you can't vouch for everyone else!

Good luck with the car hunt,

I wrote a Audi TT off a few years back. I then found out it had been reapaired and put back on the road category D.

I you would have seen the state of that car you wouldn't even consider buying one. To paint a picture get a can of coke lay on its side. Put some big boots on and jump on it. Thats what my car looked like. OOPs. I escaped with little injury and it wasnt my fault, as I was hit by another driver while stationery.

DONT DRINK AND DRIVE

On a new car it's not good news, but on an older car it's probably nothing much. Probably good news cause it means you got some new parts on it
