I lived in Alberta for 2 years, when I was 11(now I'm 33).The first time I had to babysit was when my neighbour's baby was born and 3 months later the mother had to go back to work. She worked only afternoons and that was the time when I babysat. For 6 hours.I cope with it and it definitely wan't a problem.I guess a child can babysit after the age of 10.

This is Canada's Department of Human Services web site. It is much like the United States' Family Service page. YOu can ask a question and find answers to other questions.
It is always bes to check with them about your country's laws on the legal age for a caretake aka babysitter for your children.
Here in the state Kentucky where I live, the age is 10 years old.
I dont think however that a 10 year old is a mature enough baby sitter, even for a few hours.
I would opt for someone who has children, or at least someone who is in high school. Someone who can drive my child to the hospital should something happen and someone who knows CPR.

Legally and safely are two different issues. The law is an attempt to give broad guidelines (you have to draw the line somewhere). For the sake of everyone involved, be sure your care giver is mature enough to handle any possible emergency including disasters. Course work in child development and first aide would be imperative.

There is no legal age to babysit...I used to babysit at about 13...but only in the neighbourhood if my mother was home.
