why do people lie about the pettiest stuff ?

,don't they know when the other person finds out the truth it just makes it alot worse,seriously it hurts especially when they lie to ur face and u catch them on it later,it sucks when this person is supposed to be your friend or boyfriend/girlfriend

From the research I've done, some people lie because they have low self esteem, some lie because they get a rush from "putting something over on someone"
Others, like my husband, is a people-pleaser & conflict-phobe & will do anything or say anything to get everybody happy. It usually isn't about you, it's the other perons issue and here's what I do to avoid being in that situation:
! avoid asking questions that you know will trigger them to lie
Avoid the person
Ask yourself; how important is it that I was just lied to
State your boundaries & let them know you detest lying and don't have time listening to lies

I think a lot of people tell lies because they have a low self esteem. If they make out that they are a better person (in their own judgement) than they believe themself to be, then they feel better in themselves. As you said, it usually catches up with them and backfires. I think too, that it can become a habit, so after a while, they will lie anyway, even if they don't need to.

If this person is any kind of friend and you yourself are a truthful person, unfortunately, I think you need to get them out of your life and find a new boy/girlfriend. If they do it once, they'll do it again. It's not personal, it's about them, but you need to distance yourself from them to maintain your own self esteem. It's easy to take this sort of thing personally when it comes from someone you care about and it will affect you eventually. You need to surround yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself - these are the only types of relationships that will last the test of time.

Yes it does suck but they only lie if they feel they cannot tell the truth because the other person is not interested

Habitual liars will lie about anything and couldn't tell the truth if their life depended on it. To hear them tell it though, they tell the gospel truth and can always find someone dumb enough to believe them. At least for awhile anyway. Then they move on to someone else and start the same **** all over again.

Yes, a friend lying to you really sucks. Why they do it, I don't know. I just recently stopped talking to a so-called-friend for the second time because of this very reason. I thought after a 5 year break she had changed. NOT! Sucks big time. She really hurt my feelings.

some people lie to eliminate conflict, others to make themselves look better, others to cover up something embarrassing. There are lots of reasons why it is done, none of them being good. Lieing can make things easier, sometimes it can make things seem better, even if its not real, and that is the appeal. Honesty can be hard.

They feel that lying will compensate for the things they lack. Somehow, in their twisted & demented mind, they function by the premise “if it ain’t say, I’ll just say it’s so…”

Pure futility, because ultimately nothing comes from the lie…WHY, because there was nothing to begin with in the first place.

Such a shame. People are too scared to face reality.

yeah it hurts a whole lot. I can totally relate to you on that. Its like they lie so you won't get mad and then you get mad anyways.

I wish people would realize that telling the truth is so much better.
I wish I knew why they lie???? maybe it would help me understand why I always get lied to all the freakin time!
