I have been there 3 times in 2003 and 2004. Great place. Fly china airlines or EVA Air. EVA air has a deluxe economy seat you pay extra and it is a business class seat and leg room. Depending on your size of course. Hong Kong is an island and it is a 5 minute subway trip. So, I would suggest staying on the Kowloon side or mainland side. You don't need a visa to visit Hong Kong. If you want to visit Shenzhen just across the border then you might need a visa, you can get it there in a day or more at a local travel agency or at the border. Hotels? You have your choice, I hear the YMCA is good if you don't plan on bringing anyone back to your room. :-)) Most are reputable and clean. I have only stayed at the Nikko Hotel and Hyatt Regency. Both nice and on par with U.S. hotels of the 4 or 5 star nature. Lots to see, Hong Kong Disneyland, Mon Kok flea market, Shopping malls galore, etc. Chinese food of every different style. Most speak enough english that you do not have a problem. Hainan is a couple hours away by boat. And their airport makes LAX look like a dump.

Been there and love it. We stayed in the Gold Coast Hotel in Tuen Mun. Totallu awesome. Lots of places to go to.
