I don't think people realize the severity of the environment's situation. I share your frustration and I always have. I struggle to get my husband to try to do those little things to conserve. I think politically in our country we have a strange view of looking at morals. Right now the religious moral right is obsessed with things like gay marriage. Why can't they see the destruction of God's creations and the plight of the world's citizens as moral dilemmas? It's very frustrating to see people with their minds in the wrong places.
Also, apathy is easier than action. I've heard it from my husband's mouth- "If I do this, I'm only one person, that doesn't make that much of a difference." If only people could think of themselves as a part of a whole instead of an individual. We're so selfish!

Lots of people care, and are actively doing things about it. Turn off the tv, and surf sites where people are trying to make a difference. You'll connect with plenty!
here are few places to start:

People are very worried about the environment right now. It's been in the news a lot because of Al Gore's film, "An Inconvenient Truth," and it's very much in the public consciousness at the moment.

It is easier to do nothing than to do something. I think many feel that it is someone else's job and they don't have to worry about it. Because we are such a wealthy country people feel the government will take care of it and they may not feel or see the effects. It takes time and effort to get involved, recycle, reuse, repair, check labels, pick up trash, write to government officials....We are a nation of consumers and in the process we are consuming the future.

Plenty of people are, and are doing something about it. So, if you want, you can join a group of people that are concerned. There are lots of ways.
Environmental ideas don't have as much influence in our government any more. We have solved many of the problems that were obvious to everyone. We no longer have any near as much bad water, where fish can't live and which smells bad. We have much less air that smells bad. We've cleaned up a lot of waste dumps.
And we have become much more concerned with money and less with the quality of our life. We are much more concerned about us and today, and less about others and tomorrow.
Some of the ways you can help the environment are by educating people and by political action to help elect people who share your views.
