PROPOSED PRAYER BAN FOR WOMEN:

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia -- Officials are considering an unprecedented proposal to ban women from performing Muslim prayers in the immediate vicinity of Islam's most sacred shrine in Mecca. Some say women are already being kept away.

The issue has raised a storm of protest, with some women saying they fear the move is meant to restrict women's roles in Saudi society even further.

But the religious authorities behind the proposal insist its real purpose is to lessen the chronic problem of overcrowding.

It was un-clear why the step was being considered now, but officials say they have growing concerns about overcrowding.

The chief of the King Fahd Institute for Hajj Research, which is behind the plan, said the restrictions are already in place.

But Sheik Youssef Khzeim, deputy chief of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs, denied the reports.

"This is still a study and nothing has been implemented," Khzeim said.

Personally, I think it is a disgrace against women! There are other ways to reduce crowds, such as age limits etc...but this way would be pure discrimination against women!

Dear Ms. 4 peace,

I know they can handle it for themselves. I did not ask how they should handle it, I asked if you agree, but thanks for your words of wisdom!

From what I have seen, women are treated as dogs in Islam. I wouldn't be surprised to see this type of absurd treatment continue and even become more widespread in Islamic dominated countries. If they do not believe Jesus Christ is God then the whole command for men to "love their wives like Christ loves the Church" is pointless.

In Japan they hav done segregation of man and woman boarding a train. Do u think this is discrimination.

Mecca is overcrowded and very2 hot during the hajj, and i believe u agree that most woman tend to be weaker than man psychologically and strength.
If the site is too overcrowding , is it better to protect the woman first no matter what their age is.

U simply assume Islam discriminate woman.
Woman in Islam is liberated since europe is in its dark ages with it inquisition.
There is cases of discrimination, but it is due to the culture of those people , not in Islam eg; in Pakistan.

Woman in America is only liberated from the early 1900s , gradually till now.
And u who has been on earth for a years, dare to accuse Islam who has liberated woman for more than 1400 years.

What a wonderful question but such a difficult one to answer. I see that some people do not like your question, but those are only the closed minded, so pay not attention to them.

As I am a frim opponenet of segragation, you can understand that this raises my dander. However, before I can voice my opinion, I would like to think about this sentence in the newspaper article:

"The issue has raised a storm of protest, with some women saying they fear the move is meant to restrict women's roles in Saudi society even further. "

I would like to know if these are Islam and/or Saudi women or are these women from Christian or western countries?

I say, lets hear the answers from women on both sides of the coin and what do their men think of this idea?

And people: DO NOT JUDGE POOR WILLIAM! He posted a question, and without bias, he added his opinion. Please respect him and opinions as you would want us to respect yours.

sure, I agree. it will be frustrating on them before each and every thing, yet after a technology or 2, the girls in Jiddah may be the purely smart creatures there. you in basic terms were given to chew the bullet in certain circumstances and look on the large image. it's going to launch a large kind of their time for further significant issues, like having a existence.
