This website gives the perfect answer: "When a cat kills prey, it bites down quickly several times. The 'chatter' is simulating the cat's behavior at the time of attack. Alternatively (according to a visitor): it's pure and simple frustration. When a cat is stalking or killing a bird, they're almost invariably completely silent. It's when they are shut off from the prey that they chatter."

I like that "cluck-cluck-cluck" kind of clicking sound a cat makes when it sees a bird that it plans to attack. Honestly, I think the weird sounds that a cat makes when it has a bird in its cross-hairs is an attempt to suppress an instinctive full animal growl or "lion's roar" that the cat knows would frighten off the bird.

You know the creator was trying to create the perfect predator and designed cats. He ordered his clarks to hive him wings as well so that he can hunt in the sky as well. But those "chicks" foresaw the danger and bribed the clerks with "hot" n steamy moments and got it for themselves. It was too late by the time lord came to know about it and he had no choice but to despatch the cats to earth with no wings. Ever since then the cats never liked the birds. Never heard this?

I find it really creepy, my cats are indoor cats and they make that sound with toys on strings, I think it is kind of like a communication thing.

I've seen many cats do this...
I would think to try and draw it in, maybe an attempt to speak animal languages
there may be no correct answer, maybe a cat whisperer could help :-P

The thrill of the hunt excites them and they are using cat language to express how irritating it is for them because they can look and not lunge!!!

Chatter is a normal, natural instinctive sign of excitement. Their tails usually are flipping as well.

It is really strange, isn't it? They make it only when they see the birds.
