Yes, Moon, I definitely believe this is true. Before I departed for Japan to teach English as a Second Language several years ago, I went out and rented a bunch of Japanese films. Being a cinema buff I'd already seen many of the great films by Kurosawa but the purpose of these rentals was to catch a glimpse into modern-day Japanese culture. Combined with loads of Internet research and reading several books (both travel and otherwise) on the topic, it worked wonderfully well.
I'm not sure you're planning on visiting Japan anytime soon but I can highly recommend 'Tampopo,' which offers a nice course on Japan's love of food -- and the search for that elusive "perfect" bowl of Ramen noodles -- as well as a lovely contemporary romantic comedy (one that Hollywood ripped off with expectedly atrocious results a couple years back) called 'Shall We Dansu?' Both offer many insights about the Japanese culture and both are very entertaining. :)

No. Movies are someone else's ideas and ideals. We have to remember that movies and TV shows are made up for entertainment purposes only. The only way to really get to know a people is to visit them in their natural environment. You can know a person, but can't really know what they are all about until you find out what they have been through, how did they grow up, where did they live, etc. Anyone can write anything they want to in a script or a play and have it acted out. That doesn't mean it's anything like real life. If you really want to know about something, turn off the TV, stay out of the theater and live life.

yes...I just saw "The Gridiron Gang" with THe Rock and I think it had a pretty good depiction of gang life on the streets in Compton. I think it gave me a different perspective into how teenagers can get caught up in the gang wars without really wanting to be there...then being taught that revenge by killing is the only way to avenge a fellow gang member's death.
It was an awesome movie about a football team with The Rock as their coach and how the gang members, who were at odds with one another, came together and formed a footall team and learned that their lives were worth more than that.
I thnk lots of teenagers think that their lives are worthless and they need an outlet to find themselves.
I give this movie two thumbs up!!
