I have been to China 7 times in as many years. It is a country growing at an amazing pace. But growing is the operative word. Infrastructure still needs a lot of work. China must also come to grips that with this rapid growth, there is a severe price to pay..It's environment is becoming highly polluted and toxic. If they do not put in place environment restrictions, they put in jeopardy China's greatest asset - it's people. Many are already suffering from it.
Sole Super Power??? Not likely...
People so easily discount the fact that the U.S. remains the sole country with the ability to mobilize it forces anywhere in the globe in the most fastest and efficient way. No other country can do that as well as the U.S. - that constitutes a real super power.
However, I can see that stage being shared by China, some time in our lifetime.

China doesn't have the means to project its power beyond it's borders. As far as technology, what has China invented in the last 50 years. America is way ahead in technology. China is only now going to the moon. America did that 40 years ago. America would have a hard time fighting China on their soil, China has no means of moving its troops off the mainland. India will be the next economic superpower. They have a better educated people that speak english and western countries are more likely to set up shop there.

They are one great war away from being the sole superpower. In order to be the best you have to beat the best. The United States and the Soviet Union became Superpowers after they defeated Germany, which was quickly establishing itself as the greatest military power since France under Napoleon. Therefore to be the sole Superpower they would either have to go on a massive offensive war and win (which hasn't happened in Asia since China was conquered by the Mongols) or stand up agaist a nation that is going on a massive offensive war and be the strongest power after the war is finished. However, the fighting spirit of the Japanese appears to be reawakening so if China doesn't make its move quickly it could loose its opportunity to become anything more than a regional power.

The US economy is still larger than all other econmies put together. China's econmy is growing, but at such a slow rate that it would take centuries for them to overtake the US. The Chinese military is an invasion deterent, but not much else. The environmental conditions in China are deplorable. While the education for those in the cities is pretty good, for the majority of the chinese its awful.
Not close! And your assertion that the US is not a superpower is absurd!

Perhaps you have heard the expression- it's all about soul !
So long as China harbors some of the most oppressed people in the world, its soul as a nation can never truly shine. And so long as China's soul cannot shine, no honest human can truly believe or yield to the idea that china is a superpower.
So to answer you question, China will be a superpower when it get's with the program of liberty !

The crux of this question becomes when do you believe that the US will cease being a superpower.
We are overtaxing our assets and our resources, but trying to tie down a year that the US "Rome" will fall is still too difficult.
Short answer, not anytime in the next decade.

Still a long ways off.
Remember, the essentially all the world's trade travels by ship, and the USN controls the oceans now and for the forseeable future.
Anybody want to guess as to when the last time a maritime power lost a war?

Beijing, a city in China, will not become a world super power, China however, already is.
Think about this: why has George Bush not invaded China in an effort to rid the world of Communism?
In China there is no freedom of speech or choice of religion (know any practicing Chinese Muslims in China? How many mosques in China?) Speaking out against the government in China is strongly discouraged. America stands for non of this. Why doesn't the USA help the repressed of China? Because the US would clearly be taking on a country superior in military might, not to mention the overwhelming number of military personnel to contend with in the event of a conflict.
With all their military might, the US could not contain the Chinese and North Korea in the 50's during the "Korean Conflict". The attacking Chinese would blow whistles and used the very basic of weapons (single shot rifles, machetes, sticks). Since then, China has modernized their armed forces, to say the least.
China is a super power now.
