In July it was 1,598 and June was over 2,500. Is this the kind of freedom the war supporters wanted?

Because Sunni's hate the Shia's and the Shia's hate the Sunni's and the Sunni's and Shia's hate the Kurds. Under Saddam's iron fist it was repressed. Iraq might have to split into 3 countries. Freedom has nothing to do with the bombings - freedom has allowed the hate to come out without fear of repraisals by Saddam's secret police. Don't blame freedom - blame "history", and they have a very long "history" over there. We have freedom in the US and you don't see car bombs going off over here every day do you? The Iraqi government has just taken over the Iraqi armed forces - let's see what happens from here. Admitted - things are a mess over there, but freedom is not the cause of the hate between the ethnic groups - its "history". Hopefully, things will improve shortly. The people are sick to death (literally) of the violence and the Iraqi's themselves will be the ones to fix this or let things slide into further chaos.

Unfortunately civilians are killed during war. NO ONE likes it. But it is a fact of life. Therefore every war should be well thought out before it is entered. Is the civilian loss worth the possible outcome? What other outcomes might there be besides the one the country is looking for? Are those other outcomes better than what we are facing now? These are all questions that have to be asked. And if the answers are for the most part positive then the war should proceed.

I agree that it would be nice if NO ONE were killed during war but that is just not a possibility. During war there has to be a winner and a loser. It would be nice if the general population came out of a war better off than they were before but that rarely happens.

I do not believe anyone wanted any casualties, including our government but that is not possible. But is the war doing what we hoped? I'm not sure. Is it heading in the right direction? I'm not sure. But I do know if we back out now, we will pay for it for many years to come. And I personally do not want my children to have to clean this mess up. I want to finish the job we went in there to do. And not ask my children to clean it up for me, or worse, be killed because we didn't finish the job. And that is what we are looking at.

For the record, a civilian who picks up a weapon against a soldier is no longer a civilian, they are a combatant.

Nice one, trying to manipulate the data to look as if America is the Evil. I am ashamed you are a citizen. You should apply to the Comunist News Network and get a reporting job, you would fit right in.

But we all have to have people who hate their country, their government and their people. Bet you would have no problem killing Americans, but would refuse to kill the enemy.

Avery, erudite is not using facts. he is warping the truth. Facts are pure bits of information not stained with someone elses twist of the truth. I caught him lying about American troop dying already. i have found more chinks in his "truth" over the last week. You should really stop listening to everyone that throws the information you want to hear out there...

Many more "civilians" were killed under Saddam's terror (reign)
than are now. You also can not trust insurgent reporters
numbers - how many did they kill & are they counting pets & everything like was counted in Vietnam.
Our Military never purposely kill civilians - maybe 7 or 8 have, most stick to the mission. My relatives say they rarely fire their guns at all, & we are not planting the car bombs outside of markets & churches. They are. Freedom supporters & Military supporters will never be "war supporters". You can keep saying it but it does not make it so.

The US unofficial policy in Iraq appears to be to promote chaos. Why they feel there is a need for continued instability in Iraq is debatable and probably has an economic motive. The political solution imposed on Iraq is similar to the those imposed by the Romans on the countries they conquered. Obviously the so called Democratic Government put in place is a sham and many people are aware of that and reject it. Also, there is a real problem with the division of ethnic groups because Iraq is an artificially created country that would be better off divided between these groups - however this would make the situation far more difficult for the US to control and exploit.

One reason given is that America needs the war to revitalise the US economy. Another reason given is that events in Iraq are used to divert media and other Arab countries attention from other activities and situations. Another is the ongoing chaos is a form of 'divide and rule' - and that a peaceful united Iraq might be a threat to Israel and US policy in the Middle East.

One thing that is certain - The war was engaged on false pretences and is illegal under the terms of International law. Most US citizens believe that Saddam was a threat to them, participated in 9/11 and supported Bin Laden - That is because they have been fed that b.s. by their media. People who live outside the USA have access to a less spurious media system - they are also unburdened by a population in which 45% of the people are semi-literate. Sorry Americans - you guys need to wake up to some harsh realities.

I have heard one story were an Iraqi Police trainee was ordered to drive a car to a busy market in Baghdad and phone the base when he arrived. The man was unable to get a signal so got out and walked to a corner were he received a clear signal. Confirmation of his arrival to his superior was immediately followed by a massive explosion which turned out to have been the car he was driving. Lucky for him he's alive unlucky for others their lies are slowly being revealed for all to see. Obviously the authorities are helping to fuel the chaos – exactly why remains a good question.

I think they're saying 1500+ dead in Baghdad alone, an increase from about 600 the prior month. We've sent a lot of extra troops there - was it 13,000?. Anyway the answer, is obviously to "stay the course"

Sasil..: Erudite is just challenging you with FACTS. Why not look for some FACTS to counter his argument and have an intelligent discussion. There are points you can make for your side, you know. And, it's not just our military killing people it's the Iraqi's killing each other also. You should try to read some of the news on this before responding. Read Paul H below for a good summary of who's dying.

In Corilla warfare how can u tell who are civilians and who are not? Their not in military uniforms that define who they are. Sure that's no reason for civilians to be killed but it does explain some part of the true reason. Besides in this day and age the war on terrorism has no civilians we are all pawns waiting to be captured.

IF you numbers are accurate, which I doubt, the reason is clear. The terrorists use civilians, women and children, to protect themselves. They hide behind them and in their homes. Most terrorists killed also count toward "civilian" deaths because they are not part of a military group. They are just that, terrorists.

Because it is a little thing called war and there is always going to be civilians that un fortunately well lose there life. My husband has been in the military for 8 years and is devoted to his job. I think people should stop and think about all the American people we have lost and there families for once.
