It would have started another war, and we're already kinda busy in two others at the moment.

That is because of Red-China. In the 50's, We pushed the North Koreans back across the Yalu-River after the ingenious landing in Pusan, S. Korea. Anyways, we pushed them all the way back into China, And Gen. Douglas MacArthur wanted to keep pushing all the way across China. President Truman Forbid him to, MacArthur made the mistake of saying quote: "Why not? we'll be fighting the S.O.B.'s some day anyways"! Truman relieved him of his command, ordered a "Cease-Fire", and pulled back to the original 38th parallel, (The D.M.Z.) which had been established before the war. Then they had talks with the Chinese and N.-Koreans, which continue to this day. There has never been a "Peace-Treaty" signed between the North and South, Just the original "Cease-Fire", which to date has been violated thousands of times. It's considered one of the most heavily defended border's on the planet.. That being said, you can see why we have not tryed military action against the north to halt their nuclear program. The Chinese have made it quite-clear they would not stand by and watch that, and it would most likely lead to a "Nuclear Holocaust" or Global-Nuclear War. Hope this answered you question. 1st. Different strategy that Iran - Here you have actually 6 countries talking (sort of) to each other - I would agree with you that the result looks the same but for this issue I would say that the US is a bit more tactful

North Korea is supported by China who will not tolerate any invasion or military action againt North Korea.

Remember 1950? If China did not step in, there wouldn't be a North korea today.
