I'm picking up an Avis rental car from the airport next month and need to get onto I75 to head south into Florida. Can I do it without having to use I85 / 285 and getting hopelessy lost in the process?

If you find it confusing getting on to I85 just outside the airport try going down Camp Creek Parkway - clearly signposted - and go straight down until you reach I285, turn South on I285 and you will come to I75 South.
I75 does go past the airport but on the other side from the car hire places with no access - unless they've built some new roads since I was last there.
The Camp Creek route is longer than going onto I85 but somehow easier to get on to.

There's no direct freeway access from the airport to 75 south. You can follow the signs but it will take you down some winding access road/surface street and to the other side of the airport before connecting to the highway. Just be advised. It's the most direct way, but can be confusing if you are expecting an immediate highway on ramp like 285 and 85.

It depends on what part of Florida you are going to. You can get on 75 south and it will take you diectly into Florida without hitting 285. The roads at the airport are very clearly marked.

Yes you can. The airport is right on I 75. Just come out of the airport and go south on I 75. No need to go on I285 or I85. It's easy.
