My friend's mother has recently been diagnosed with an enlarged spleen and has to go ho hospital once a week for chemotherapy. She wont tell my friend what is wrong, perhaps she isnt sure herself, but my friend is really worried about her. Chemotherapy is used to treat cancer - what kind of cancer can cause an enlarged spleen? I'd like to be able to reasssure my friend that it's nothing serious but I dont think it sounds good.

Lymphoma seems like the most obvious answer if it is actiually cancer. Could it be some kind of liver disease? When the liver is enlarged blood backs up into the spleen and causes an enlarged spleen and perhaps they are actually treating a liver disease and not her spleen.

there are many cancers that can cause an enlarged spleen, but then again she may be telling the truth and it may just be an enlarged spleen. you should let your mom's friend be the one to tell her/him anything that might be serious, there is no point in putting bad thoughts into their head. what you should be doing is trying to keep their mind off of it. the mom will tell when she believes it is necessary. good luck with this.

Without knowing exactly what is going on with your friend's mom, it is difficult to say what she's suffering from. But, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease are all types of cancer that are associated with an enlarged spleen.

And just guessing will only make matters worse in your and your friend's minds. I suggest your friend talks to her mother and asks her directly. Knowing the truth is always better than guessing.

Rest Easy Mother's Friend:

Surgery is a tricky thing and a little scary. Like putting on makeup, huh? Community Guidelines do not allow participants to insult others. So I can't call you a dumb douchbag or fat as a cow. Even if I really want to. I just have to bite my tongue and count to 10. I don't need those anal retentive point Nazis zapping me eight points again for trumped up violations. I have to say something less offensive and more supportive like : I hope they have success with the surgery extracting your friend's mother's spleen and gallbladder. Then I can say something like. It is served best with a fruity red wine, by the way. Any date set yet for your surgery? They are doing wonderful things now with removing objects, like sticks from body parts, especially anuses. Good luck!

Lymphoma.

The spleen is part of the Lymphatic System.
