Actually that has it's roots in antiquity. Historically, the left side of the body was considered the 'evil' side of the body... in Latin, it's called "Sinistra", which is the root word for "Sinister". (simarily, the right side of the body is considered the "Dexterous" - from the latin "Dexter"), Obviously, a physician would NEVER have wanted to be seen using the left hand or appear left handed because only evil people were left handed, so the practice among physicians, historically, was limited to right handed or dexterous persons. And it's still that way today.

All tools and surgical instruments are not designed for only right handed folks.
You will see, upon examination, that most tools can be used effectively in either hand. Some are indeed 'handed'; scissors for example can be biased either way.

Now, where did I put that left-handed, metric Crescent wrench?

Designed by right-handed people?

There may be some specialized left-handed surgical equipment (but look at the general economy), very little caters to lefty. I can't remember the last time I saw a pair of left handed scissors in a store.

What specific instrument are you thinking of? clamps work either hand, as to scapels. saws and needles likewise

It is simple economics. Companys want to make the most money they can on a product so therefore they make it to meet the needs and demands of the majority of the people that are going to buy it. That means if they are making a tool it probably is going to be for the majority of people and that would mean for right handed people.

There are more right handed people in the world thus most things are made for right handers. But some things are made to be used with either hand. Scissors are indeed made for right handers but things like scalpels can be used with either hand.

Right handed people are dextrous. And those left handers are downright sinister.

I prefer my surgeons to be dextrous.
