I've been thinking about it for a long time, and I have now decided to do something about it. I would like to live in a city environment. Other things that would be important to me are: job opportunites, financial aspects (expense of living costs in particular), quality of the area, ease of travel (to visit the UK and other parts of America), social life, how far from the beach, and how welcome the people would make a British girl! And anything anyone else can think of that would be important to someone who is totally unfamiliar with the area. I have been thinking about New York, California, Washington, Massachusetts, places similar to that, but I will listen to anyone's suggestion. I would also be interested to speak to anyone who has relocated recently, or who knows the likely financial costs of doing so. Thanks to anyone who can help me!

My favorite US cities are Philadelphia, Boston, and San Francisco.
Jobs pay more in more expensive cities in the US, except for minimum wage jobs, so the wages will line up with your expenses. Pick where you want to live based on what climate you like first, then whether you want friendly or standoffish people around you, whether you like a fast-paced or slow moving social environment, and stuff like that.
Philadelphia and Boston are great towns. Both have a lot of history, great food and lots to do. Both are in areas that get winter, though, so if you are allergic to cold, don't go there.
Florida and Texas are slow. The weather is hot but muggy, and there are tons and tons of bugs of all descriptions, so those aren't good places for Miss Muffet types. Costs are lower, but jobs pay less too. Scenery is better in Florida than in Texas.
Chicago and all the midwest get boiling hot in summer and colder than you can imagine in winter. The wind can cut you down to nothing in no time, and you'll swear the entire world hates you when it blows you along the empty streets. The city is a grand one, though, with lovely architecture. I prefer to only visit--in the warm months.
The West Coast is gorgeous, with soaring vistas, mountains, palm trees and a resort feel wherever you go. The pace is fairly brisk, though, and prices are higher than you think, even for all those fresh vegetables and local fruits. Jobs pay well, though, and entertainment is cheap and plentiful. I live in the San Francisco Bay area, and there are so many beautiful beaches, woods, and other fun things to do I sometimes forget to work!
You will like it here, and Americans are helpful people. Just ask for whatever you want, and someone will try to get it for you.

I'd suggest a more southerly state than what you're thinking about. Charlotte, NC is a great area. About 3-4 hrs from a great east coast beach. Banking center of the southeast, great real estate, cost of living isn't that high(many suburbs in the area you could find very reasonable housing), plenty of activities to do in your off time and tons of job opportunites. People tend to be very friendly and helpful.

i like new york cause i'm a new yorker. new york's a nice place. shopping's awosome. beach's not that far away considering it's an island. new york has the world's biggest financial distract aka wall street. and i'm pretty sure there's a lot of job oppertinity. it has 2 airports, 1 internationally one nationally and travels would be easy to arrange, there's thousands of travelling agency if you needed. and nyc is a city that never sleeps, so social life should be awosome, there's lots of clubs and parties. since nyc has always had lots of immigrantion, you would certainlly feel welcome, there's ppl from around world. living expenses, it depends, if you want to live in manhatten in the center of the city, the prize would be pretty high. but if you live in other boroughs like queens, brons and brooklyn, it's actually not that bad. food really isn't that expensive and neither are the cloth (not at 5th ave though) and subways/underground, connect the boroughs making travels easily. hope you like new york!

Although a pretty expensive place to live, Boston is a very European-feeling city. I recommend you check it out as one possible option. Boston would also give you a reasonable (time & cost) trip back to the UK.

I have to agree. Texas is the best state in America. If you like to drink and do Karaoke go to Austin. If you like mass transit and and a dry heat go to Dallas. If you like new stadiums and evergrowing urban culture come to Houston. If you like history and Spanish culture move to San Antonio. I like houston better than all of them. If you don't like Texas then try Chicago, Illinois. I've been there and I liked it much better than Los Angeles.

Stay in your own country for now. It's not a good time to immigrate.
