It's not what you say, it's how you say it when you say it. Do you sound bored when you say it or are you excited? Dogs are more keen to the emotions behind the statement than what's in the statement. Also, is there physical touch with it? Do you pet the dog when you say it?

Take him for a walk and ask him the same questions as you would your best friend. Sometimes they are smarter then your best friend and won't ever judge you.
