I have suffered from migraines since I was 10 years old-I am now 50 so I have had 40 years experience. I do know a bit about them. First, you can have a migraine at any time. There is no set pattern-I have gone months and even years without having a single migraine. There are many migraine triggers. Hormones play a big part. That is why women suffer from migraines 3 times more than men. A week before your period is the worst time. I found that birth control pills helped me. Also, sinus problems and allergies as well as hot weather can trigger migraines. Certain foods can also be a trigger-chocolate and sugar are the number 1 offenders. Cheese can also do it. Watch your stress level too. Ask your Doctor about the triptan drugs such as imitrex and maxalt. These are very effective-they are expensive though. I have found that 2 regular excedrin works pretty good most of the time-the trick is to take medicine before your headache gets to bad. Good luck.

See a neurologist.

There are prescritions you can use to prevent migraines, and prescriptions you can use to stop the headaches once they start.

I take 5 mg Zomig (zolmitriptan) once I get a headache. It almost always helps, even after the migraine is well under way (some prescritions must be taken right at the onset of the headache, or they are ineffective).

Lay down, headache side UP, in a cool, dark, very quiet room.

Try freezing a damp rag, then laying it over your eyes, or at the back of your neck.

Sometimes, taking **decongestants**, as well as migraine prescriptions, works wonders.

If you can sleep, that helps, too.

Best of luck to you!

Since there are different types of migraines and different causes for migraines, it is difficult to tell you what to do.

In any case, I personally usually take a migraine pain-killer and try to rest in a "dark and cold" room, i.e. a room with an open window and the shutters down. Even if it does not make the migrain go away completely, it usually helps me to feel better.

I used to have migraines twice to three times a week for years. It was very frustrating because nothing would ever work twice. I would find one thing that worked, then it would not work the second time. And so I spent alot of time doing research on it, going to doctors, going to chiropractors, reading, trying new things, etc, etc. The things that helped more than once: Potassium tablets (can find in any drug store), vitamin B3 (gives a flush but what it does is opens the blood flow in veins, which are restricted by the headache). To fix once and for all, I had to change my diet totally. I used to not eat in the morning, or just eat some muffin or something. VERY BAD. You have to eat protein with just a bit of sugar - natural sugar is better, like fruit or honey. Eggs or meat or something. This makes your day start off better too.
None of the painkiller work every time either. Your body gets used to them and they become ineffective.
Also unfortunately, i am addicted to coffee and I am trying to stop, I used to drink several cups a day and I am down to 1 cup per day. If I don't drink it I will end up with a migraine, throwing up, deaf in one ear - the full deal. So another cause of migraines I discovered was not taking in the caffiene that the body is used to. Sucks and I am trying to quit. I hope this helps.
ps: If you have one now, best thing to do is hot shower, on your back, not on head, dark room, cool, sleep it off. Then when no longer nauseated, EAT protien, NO SUGAR, NO JUNK FOOD. And drink lots of water.

I was prescibed several prescriptions but they all made me very dizzy. I actually found that Advil Migraine works wonders. I've suggested it to a couple of my friends and they all agree as well. It works very quickly. I also find that although it is very cliche - staying out of bright lights helps. Hope you feel better :).

Take Excedrin with migraine and SLEEP...in a dark, quiet room. If it's really bad, I'll take a prescription pill...

Advil helps to a degree. My migraines are normally triggered by scents (specifically perfumes or strong colognes). I will then go into a dark room (the darkest possible) and sleep it off. The best thing is to try to determine your triggers as then you can try to avoid them if possible.

Take Excedrin, lay down in a dark, quiet room, put Head On on my forehead & pray it will go away. My doctor told me to try putting my feet in a warm-hot bucket of water while holding a cold cloth to my forehead. I never tried it but it could work. The idea is to dilate the blood vessels in your head which is what the meds Relpax, Imetrex are designed to do (they are called vasodilators).
