It sounds very like sciatica. I suffer from it and have done for many years.
It's usually caused by a prolapsed disc - the disc moves and presses on the sciatic nerve, which causes the pain.
The pain can vary from a dull ache to sharp stabbing pains. It normally starts at the base of the back/top of your bottom, and can progress downwards, into your bottom, hip and thigh.
There's not much that can be done for it. Plenty of rest and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen.
In the case of it being a prolapsed (slipped) disc, most GPs are reluctant to advise anything other than painkillers and rest. If it is at the stage where you cannot walk, they'd refer you to your local hospital for further investigations. Surgery is sometimes and option but in depends on the severity of the diaganosis.

Had the same thing about 2 months ago - find a chiropractor on your insurance program - I went 3 days in a row for a complete recovery & felt better after the 1st visit - it was also the 1st time I had ever been to 1 before..
It sounds like it's in a spot that's much lower than where the kidneys are located..

When you are a baby, you have a large seperation in your lower spine. Thats why babies can just put their head on the floor while they are sat down. As you get older your hamstrings (which are connected to your lower spine) get tighter and grow shorter. When this happens it fuses the seperation together and traps your ciattic nerve which runs through your bum cheek. It sounds like that to me. Go see a physio and they will massage it and tell you what exercises you need to do to fix it, mainly hamstring exercises but they will explain.
