I'm supposed to compare the treatment of the same word in three different dictionaries and in one of the questions I'm supposed to answer, the term "componential analysis methods" comes up. I searched on the internet, but couldn't find anything. Anyone know what it is or where I can find out?

Componential analysis refers to the art of breaking meaning down into its component pieces. For example, what are the basic components of the noun 'dog'? We would say 'dog' represents +animate, +domesticated, +mammal, for example, and that 'horse' also represents +animate, +domesticated, +mammal. So what makes 'horse' different than dog in a linguistic sense? Perhaps we might also have a component +transport for 'horse', for which 'dog' is -transport. But componential analysis seeks to map out all those distinctions necessary to distinguish the entire lexicon of a language one from another. As you can see it is an enormously difficult enterprise to map out the basic components of meaning for an entire language.
