To get to know a person better and to see if you click. Also, should be enticing so if things do go well, there's some electricity hopefully on the next meet. Often going to a film is good as it provides a topic for discussion if you go for a drink. Personally, it's a chance to get to know someone a little better.

If I like the guy, I'd hope for some sort of emotional connection, and perhaps he'd ask me out again. Nothing much more on the first date.

a good conversation to find out if they are the right one, and whether to continue or call it quits. This can be done over tea, a movie or other social event. If we can't talk, it ain't a date (just a social meeting).
