The pain Management Centre have exhausted all options so need to find a cure of my own. At the moment heat helps and cold hurts me. A hot water bottle on my back helps but is causing severe marking which my consultant has said will cause more problems later. PLEASE HELP.

Sometimes it can't be cured completely but maybe something can help you. Steroids are only a temporary fix and will cause damage to the bones(makes them porous & brittle) if you use them often or long term. If they don't help after a couple of injections I wouldn't try them anymore because something other than inflammation is causing the pain. Ultram 100 mg in the morning might help. The reason I say in the morning is because it might make you hyper and keep you awake. Take it with food because it will make you sick @ your stomach. It sometimes causes constipation so increase your fiber or take a stool softener, & increase water intake.( A rheumatologist suggests 100mg twice daily)
Also, use good posture, and if you are overweight, try to reduce your fat intake & drink lots of water to lose the excess weight. You can also do some back strengthening exercises, just don't strain yourself. Ask your doctor for a physical therapy consult. You need to be on an anti-inflammatory if you're developing arthritis, which can be diagnosed with an x-ray. There are many you can try. Mobic is a good one, although it's expensive. Hope you feel better.

I suffered terrible lower back pain and couldnt walk for 8 weeks the physio gave me some exercises to do other wise I would have had to have an op and it helped me get back to my normal self. I still do them when the back pain returns, its something to do with the discs. Lie flat on your stomach and with your hands just lift the upper part of the body, this should strengthen the low part to go back as normal. Also dont carry anything heavey and sit with legs straight not up on the couch sideways makes it worse

It depends entirely on what is causing your low back pain. Is it a disc problem? I would definitely get some physical therapy to help strengthen your abs and back muscles- this will help support your spine.
I went through physical therapy, injections and have had a 2 level lumbar fusion back surgery and am FINALLY pain-free. It was a terrible ordeal but SO worth it in the end.

I would definately talk to your dr about suggesting a physical therapist. Im going for the same thing right now. Usually they give you some excercises to do and just keep doing them even at home. I have had this same problem since my sophmore year of high school. So almost 5 or 6 years. But just keep doing the excercises they give you and that should help also!

If your pain management doctor is telling you he's exhausted all the options and you need to figure something out on your own, you need a new pain management doctor. Their practice is supposed to be all about treating pain that lasts a long time and stems from conditions that can't be cured. A good PM doc would not be telling you to figure it out yourself.

Of course it should be cured but have we developed the means to cure it. Scientists are currently working on a bionic eye, which is a step in the right direction

i know it sounds very obvious, but you said initial...
i think that an important factor is to get your back as straight as possible, stand or sit bolt upright, stand against a wall, get your car seat straight and stop yourself from worsening the pressure causing your discomfort.
Whatever your back problem is, a very important factor in looking after your body, as taught by the pilates technique, is to allow your muscles to do the job they are designed for and not force them to perform other functions. Holding good posture at all times, especially when in discomfort, will allow the muscles that support your back to do their job and hopefully allow the problem to right itself or be alleviated.
