It depends on what part of the country you are in. Me personally? It's pop. I live in the midwest. Look at popvssoda.com to see the distribution of the word across the country.

I call it Pop. I used to work for a bottler in Vancouver BC and my employer did not like us refering to it as Pop. We were told Soda was the correct term. Old habits die hard though. I was told that the term Pop originated from a bottle design in the early 1900s that had a marble encased in a section of the neck of the bottle. The carbonation held the marble in place and you opened it by pushing the marble down creating a "Pop" noise.

In the South we don't say pop or soda we say coke. For example: "Hey Jack you wanna coke?" "Yeah, I'll take a Sprite"
Coke for us means the same thing that Pop or Soda mean in other places.
Welcome to South Alabama

Keeping in mind that I am 50 years old ... and originally from Texas ... We used to call it either "coke" or "cold drink" ... I can remember when I was about 10, I went to a restaurant outside of Texas. The woman asked what I wanted to drink. I asked if they had "coke." She said they did, so I said, "OK, I'll take a Dr. Pepper." She thought I was being a smartsky, and I had no clue what the problem was. In Texas, "Coke" was all-inclusive! Plus, Dr. Pepper was hardly sold outside of Texas when I was that age. Now it's nationally known!

My wife is from Buffalo,NY. and she says 'POP'.I am from Florida and we say 'SODA'.I believe the mid west through up state NY and Canada say 'POP'.The transients who come down to Florida,WILL be laughed at it they say 'POP'.When go up north to Buffalo,I just say "a large Coke" please",just to be safe. When I went to Canada for the first time,I saw the menus at Niagara Falls, and they all said" hamburger, fries and POP.I thought that was short for POPCORN.I said "do I have to have fries AND popcorn or can I just get a soda with that"?They said,'Like soda WATER EH?"or do you, like what a POP eh?"

In New York, we call it "soda" (are you talking to me???) although it seems to me that most other places call it pop, including Canada (where my relatives live)
