To add to the comments about "water intoxication" also known as Hyponatremia...it can be fatal. But, you have to consume large quantities of water and totally deplete the sodium in your body before this starts to take place. Generally, marathon runners are affected by this condition. It is dangerous, yes, but if detected soon enough, then it's also reversible. Basically, what happens is when you have no more sodium in your body to absorb the water, then your cells begin to absorb the excess of water and thus your cells drown. Typically the brain cells are first and that's why this condition is so serious. Do try looking on http://www.webmd.com for more information on drinking too much water. Good luck!

drinking a lot of water can temporarily give you a big stomache by filling your stomache. Obviously, a full stomache takes-up more room than an empty one.
Contrary to what other people might say, YES you can drink too much water and it can have adverse health effects.
Having a flat stomache is more about body fat percentage. Most people will tell you about their favorite ab exercises, but this will only serve to increase muscle size, strength, and endurance. You could have the best abs in the world, but if you have a high body-fat percentage, you will still have a bit gut sticking out.
HERE ARE THE BASICS:
1. you lose weight by consuming fewer Calories than you burn
2. you gain weight by consuming more Calories than you burn.
3. you should be concerned with losing FAT, not weight. There are 3500 Calories/Lbs of fat. To lost one pound of fat/week you have to burn 3500 Calories/week more than you consumed. there are 2500 Calories in a pound of muscle.
4. You should be more concerned with your percent body fat, not your weight.
5. the best, most effective way or burning fat is by combining weight-training and cardio exercise. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be. You will burn more calories all day long, including while you sleep. A health body fat percentage for males is 7-18%, females 18-24% (approximate numbers).
6. you should eat 6-8 small meals each day - this will prevent you from eating 3 large meal which will slow your metabolism while your body works to digest the large quantity of food.
As a general rule of thumb, you should be weight-training 3-4 times per week and performing cardio 3-5 times per week.
Consider hiring a personal trainer (ISSA certified) and a nutritionist. The money spent on these services is worth more than spending money on pills and potions.

You would need to chug down about three quarts of water or more all at once to come down with a case of true water intoxication. It does happen, but so rarely that I couldn't find statistics on the number of cases. These people become drowsy, lightheaded, and weak. They have trouble coordinating bodily movements and thinking straight, looking and feeling as if they just stumbled out of the local bar. But the water-intoxicated can't just go home and sleep it off. They must get treatment or risk going into convulsions, a coma, or even death.

the amount of water it takes to harm you is WAY more than the normal person could drink without throwing up and feeling extreme discomfort. You just pee it all out anyway, so drink away
edit: addressing the loads of misinformation presented by answerers in this topic:
'water intoxication' which is a term i don't like to begin with, is NOT called hyponatremia, it CAUSES hyponatremia, which is why it's dangerous. Hyponatremia of course, being low sodium levels causing all sorts of fun problems.
The amount of water required for that to happen is much much more than a normal person will drink in a day. It's more than most people can drink without throwing up, so don't worry yourself about it.

For those that don't this, water can actually kill you. Only if you drink 3 quarts of it within 30 minutes. Why, you ask? The water will decrease your sodium and potassium levels so much that you will have a heart attack.

you can get a buzz off water, but you have to drink alot of water. drinking water helps build muscles and can act as a filler between meals, but the best way to get a flat stomach is to work out. do something other than sit at the computer all day, not saying you do. what you put in your body is as important as what you do with it. why put good stuff in your body if you are not going to do anything physical to get rid of it.

Too much water is bad, but it takes quite a bit. Here's an article on water intoxication: http://chemistry.about.com/cs/5/f/blwaterintox.htm
As far as a flat stomach: you need to reduce your carb and fat intake. Try eating a high protein diet, but still eat good carbs just limit them.

it saves you being hungry and dilutes your urine. which is a healthy thing. drinking a lot during the day will mean you'll go to the toilet quite a lot but that happens anyway. flat stomach wont just come from water though
