Why, whenever I want to put my computer on standby, I get the following error message:?

I have Windows XP with an HP pavilion computer. I can't get anywhere with the service people and i have gone as far as i can on my own.

I do have a printer hooked up.

I had this problem too, but never got the error message. Hp told me to do two things:

1. Use the Safely Remove Hardware tool from your tray. Stop all USB device until you need them again. Most devices are plug and play anyway these days. Then turn the printer off, and any other devices that are plugged into a separate electrical outlet in addition to the USB cable.

2. Surge protectors can cause something called a ground loop, creating phantom voltage through the ground of the computer. This voltage will have a frequency which will interfere with communications. Since Sleep Mode is deactiveated when a device returns a signal to the computer (i.e. moving the mouse, pressing a printer button), this signal can cause the computer to exit sleep mode in the same way. They suggested taking the computer off the surge protector and putting it on a Power Cleaner which regulates frequency and voltage, and eliminates ground loops. I simply plugged my computer into the wall and this worked fine. But it wouldn't have been protected in the event of a power surge, so I bought a power cleaner at Walmart for $20.
