I assume it has something to do with the voltage (12 volts) not being high enough. If that is so, what is the lowest voltage that will cause an explosion when gasoline is ;mixed with air at it's most explosive ratio?

Has nothing whatever to do with the voltage. Under the right circumstances a very small voltage could cause an explosion. It has to do with the fact that the pump is sealed completely so the electricity and operating components are isolated from the gasoline.

If the gas tank is sealed top, there's a reasonable vacuum interior the gas tank because of the fact the automobile operates. The oxygen and vapor point is rather low. in case you have ever taken time to verify your battery voltage with the engine working you would understand there must be no extra suitable than 13.5 - 14.2 volts of electric energy that should in all possibility attain the electrical powered gas pump. i'm particularly previous and not in any respect of heard of an electric powered gas pump inflicting a gas tank explosion.

A3v arc can cause an explosion. All open circuits are sealed in the pump. A possible arc submerged in gasoline will not ignite without air.

The air in the tank is not in the proper mixture to combust. It takes a mixture of 4 to 8 % oxygen to combust. Also, the pump is externally grounded to the frame.
