Because the cost of running an airline is huge. You have to pay for the planes, the pilots, the baggage handlers, the fuel, the maintenance personnel, the ticket counter agents, insurance, legal costs, landing fees at airports, etc... On top of that, airline management is expected to return a profit to the shareholders.

Because some planes have to take off with noone or only a couple of people on board as they are chartered flights!
So by charging higher fares they can overcome the costs of flying the empty planes!

Well, because it takes a lot of money to fly a plane. You won't believe how much oil/gas the plane uses. Ask Bush to stop profiting from bribes from the oil industry.

If you actually sit down and work out the cost per mile, it actually works out as one of the cheapest forms of transport, I flew business class to Oz, via LAX, 4 years ago now I know, but its a distance of 12,500 miles, and cost £3500, you do the sums...cheap! and that was return as well

Manufacture of the plane
Gasoline to power it
Insurance to cover anything that could happen
Crews need to get paid
It's still cheaper than driving or walking or boating...faster, too.
