Why do people go around spitting all over the place does this not spread infections. Should they be arrested?

Presumably there must be medical conditions which mean the sufferers need to expel their mucus but this should be done in a pocket handkerchief.
They are cultures that accept spitting and "honking" on the floor. For some reason the Chinese are great exponents. People from other cultures should be sensitive to the environment and country they live in and adjust their habits accordingly.
The main problem seems, however, to come from young people and more so with boys. This habit is deemed to be cool. So one has to ask where does this "coolness" come from. The answer is obvious. Teenagers, whatever they say, respond to role models. Now-days its generally Footballers. Normally working class hero's who now days can be transported to the super rich class and therefore super cool. What do Footballers do, often in close up on your TV during a match? .....Gob in full glorious technicolour !!
So whose to blame? a lowering of standards? certainly but so-called football hero's should have more responsibility to the people they know they influence.
Incidentally, how many times do you see Cricketers gobbing during the match?

It is so disgusting. Even if it does not spread infections, it makes me ill. The other day, some man was spitting on the bus floor and looking around everyone else as if to say, I dare you to challenge me. They should be at least fined £500 for everytime they spit.

i dont know why people do this it is disgusting, it can spread infections including hepatitis, and HIV although to date no one has contracted it this way, although small amounts of blood may be found in spit. Yes they should be arrested and charged make an example of few people and others will be scared to follow suit. It is theoretically possible to arrest and charge someone of this under the public disorder act, make a complaint to the police if you see happening after all they cant say "it wasnt me guv" as saliva contains dna

It's a disgusting habit not helped by the so-called role models - bloody footballers! Both the footballers AND the spitters should be made to clean the area they've infected with the backbone of the law behind it - by which I mean there should be a means whereby offenders get a choice of being arrested and charged for fouling the footpath (or whatever) OR cleaning the area whilst under official supervision. One of the police forces do this for blokes (and women!) who've pissed in the street after chucking out time. They hold the person concerned until a clean-up van arrives, and the offender is made to clean up there and then, usually while all his drunken mates stand by and watch him. This tends to guarantee that the offence will never be repeated again by him/her

It is a popular conception that spitting spreads TB as TB is killed by ultraviolet light in the sun's rays. I am unsure about other diseases it may spread if any like MRSA, pneumonia etc. For one of the answer above people do not have to spit the extra mucus that they produce as everybody produces mucus throughout their respiratory tract, but normally people swallow this throughout the day.
But I guess some people to it to be obnoxious and some do it to look cool, look at sports people who regular do it, what role models.
Sometimes people do need to expectorate their sputum for medical evaluation, but this is into pot and especially not on the street.

It is really disgusting,people who are spitting just anywhere is just like a mess. Arresting them? Maybe,only if you will catch them. It will spread infection only if you will clean it with your hand uncovered.

People spit because they think its cool. I sometimes spit but only when I have a mouth full of proper dirty green fleg. I always do it in a bin or a drain though. Perhaps local councils should install spitoons at bus shelters and shopping centres.

Some people spit because they have to get rid of unwanted mucus.. Mucus not spit out can cause sinus infections.. I don't think they should be arrested..

they do it cos they are to dam lazy to use a paper tissue which they can throw away ......it use to be just the males doing it but females as well now ......i hate seeing it ... you have to avoid it on the footpath these people should be fine just as dog owners are meant to be .... but who is going to do it ??most places have both on the footpaths and parks .....so come on people stop doing it you wouldn't do it in your own home or would you
