It's an easy way for observers to see who dresses with the seasons, and who doesn't.
Of course, no one really cares what you do, but there will always be snooty busybodies (like me!) secretly thinking, "Look at that...white shoes, and it's October! What a loser!"
By the way, no such thing as "winter white"; that's a designer's term for a soft off-white, and has nothing to do with shoes.

It doesn't really matter anymore, it all depends on the culture of the area--some places you go it's crap, and others it's a sin if you're wearing white after labor day. Honestly, it's not that big of a deal not to wear white shoes, pants, skirt, whatever after labor day. I'd rather not wear the stuff than worry about people fussing about it.
Oh, and southern belles do still exist. Trust me, I live in the South.
And the snooty ex boyfriend that someone's daughter had, must be my ex too, lol.

ooo shazam got it! Its really NOT NEC now. It was absolutly all about the whole Southern Belle BS from forever ago, and it really IS about mud, snow, rain, etc. however it is perfectly acceptablenowadays, just use common sense, no sandals, open toes in the rain....I looked it up about a year ago when my daughter was dating the BIGGEST SNOB in the history of people, and the "Today" show just ran a feature on it. I never bought into that- I've ALWAYS worn what I want.

It's an old tale many people used to follow. My mother was one of them, but personally, I'm not putting my white shoes, pants or skirts away just yet.

It has to do with the weather. After labor day tends to be the wet season. Mud would ruin white shoes....

This is something that comes from times long before you. It's just a fashion thing.
You can wear white after Easter and no while after labor day. You can wear whatever you want, whenever you want. There is no secret fashion police that will come and arrest you.
