I am not religious but for some reason this question has been coming back to me over and over. If it really means what it sounds like it means, a pastor or priest or church leader preforming a blessing on children's backpacks...do those backpacks really have anything different about them from any other backpack? If it really is different because it's been blessed if the child loses it and someone else picks it up does the blessing continue. Is this just an action to help parents deal with the separation and anxiety of their children going back to school? Why would childrens backpacks be blessed?

When Satan tries to steal peanut butter sandwiches from them, the crusts will become rigid and the jelly will burn his fingers.

The true answer is that it is all about conditioning the mind of the child to accept the nonsense that the priest has POWER to use the magic of priestcraft to change the backpack from the way it was before it was blessed. An astute child should then approach the priest and suggest that the priest can demonstrate scientifically that the backpack has been altered by subjecting it to tests and comparing the results to unblessed backpacks. Priests know full well that it is all bull-crap but they enjoy messing with the minds of vulnerable children.

An item can be blessed, cursed or enchanted. But in truth, it is more common for Christians to bless people verses items or articles. But some do it. Some bless their cars & homes as well. (Protection & Peace Blessings. Some may call it Spells depending on your religion)

If the item is 'truley' blessed, then it will be blessed no matter who carries it. This is why if the blessing spoken is suppose to be for a person, then don't bless the item.

Blesssing the 'backpacks' does sound strange. Why not just bless the children???

Backpacks are just symbols. They represent the experience of the child in school and there is no harm in making the child or the parent feel that there is some extra protection or advantage from the blessing. Think of blessing as an expression of a desire for good things to happen.

Is blessing of the backpacks or the children using them? I pray over my vehicles and they run well and I am kept safe when traveling.
I'm sure that the real intention is for the children. But for a point of contact, the backpack could be blessed to protect it's owner, etc..

There is a long history of blessing inanimate objects as a protection or a sort of "boost" to the user. I imagine a blessed backpack might be used to hopefully help the student in any way. Think of a blessing as a type of prayer.

Its like when the jugs were filled with water and as it was being served it turned into wine. So when u like take the backpack, well backpacking through Europe or wherever, it can provide the things u need most also, it can hold 2x more stuff, won't be lost and ofcourse won't be stolen.

and plus the peanutbutter jelly sandwhich stays safe..with the owner. Thats me viewpoint.

As for the kids: I dont know, ask one...

They cost more. And the blessing goes to church , more likely to the pastor.

Sounds more like a Marketing tool to get people to come to the church than any practical reason.
