to JT : the time 800 is called the dark ages not because of the church but because the Roman culture and western civilization almost crumbled under the onslaught of barbarians mainly the Goths who plundered Rome, the only places where culture still remained was in the monasteries and later can the high civilization of the middle ages and they were far from dark.
Yes, the greek invented the western civ. but their ideas were assimilated by the Romans and the Roman ideas were assimilated by the Church, who made a synhesis of greek philosophy and the christian faith.

to JT I said the greek invented the westerncivilization but the romans spread it and the church humanized it, the romans adopted greek culture and greek ideas but their were more pragmatic, the church introduced the concept of the person not just the state and the family, caring for the sick,
Well a few of those things
Well the church founded hospitals , universities built cathedrals the monasteries preserving the roman culture and writing down the literature of the prechristian europe, most old universities in europe are founded by the pope.
The monasteries brought culture also to the Scandinavian countries from where I come.
Without the Church we would still be savages running around plundering the rest of Europe.
a few names:
Copernicus
Pascal
Thomas Aquinas
Michelangelo
Giotto
Rafael
and many more.

And where are you getting this from? I'm a history grad student who's taken many classes in medieval Europe, and the invention of Western Civ. was not by the church. As stated before, the roots of western culture was begun by the Greeks. Although the church transmitted many of the Greek & Roman ideas, it through out many of them, setting us back in the scieneces a good thousand years. Thank heavens the Muslims were there to save all the things that westerners threw out. The church was an important part of European history, but it was only one element in the development of Western Civilization.

The reason the Church was formed was because of insurgency. Rome had a lot of slaves. Slaves that weren't allowed in their nice marble temples. Many slaves secretly joined the Christian cult. The Christian cult spread through the Empire to Rome and It's fanatics created too great of a problem for the Roman's to handle. Insurgency is a social movement. They executed any Christian they could get their hands on, in a great variety of methods, but this did not stop the attacks. Like today, some insurgents knew they would die but did it anyways. When you stab a Roman soldier in public, you're going to either get killed on the spot or taken somewhere to 'entertain' the citizenry. What did they have to loose, most were slaves. Constantine had to make them the state religion to prevent things from getting way too out of hand. It's an evil death cult intent upon global conquest. Does it's time and width of influence matter? No. It's still evil. It still worships a Hanged God, gleefully anticipates the End of the World, condemns all other faiths to Eternal Torment, and has a long history of killing and persecuting minorities. If that isn't a death cult, than what would be?

Western civilization was invented by the Greeks, not the Romans.
And it is based on Sumerian & Babylonian civilizations. You are only off by about 2000 years in your assertion.
The Catholic church did not advance civilization, it was known as the "Dark Ages" due to the Catholic church's suppression of knowledge and advancement, i.e., "civilization."
Response:
Claiming Romans invented western civilization demonstrates your ignorance of history. And, then claiming the Catholic church did anything to advance civilization further demonstrates your ignorance.
Please name all the things invented or established by the Catholic church that advanced civilization.
Thanks.
The Catholic church is well known for suppressing science, so your claim the church established universities is a hollow claim in regards to furthering civilization.
Your list of names is irrelevant to the claim the Catholic church did anything to advance civilization. The Catholic church has a long history of corruption and actively suppressing advancement.
From my viewpoint, Catholics are barbarians. Especially those who dominated Europe during the Dark Ages. And, who came to the "New World" with the conquerors for the primary purpose of plundering the resources of the "New World."

Unfortunately, the church and Christ have not always been synonomous. In fact, quite regurlarly by my count. Also, just because Christianity is a rallying point for an army does not make them "The Church". The claim alone does not make them the de facto replacement for the genuine article. Besides, the roman empire was getting tired anyway.

Yes I knew that. There's your answer. I also know the Catholic Church got very powerful and rich from it. I know the power which it still has on some people. I know all of the good and bad that it has done. I've seen the Vatican and wasn't impressed. Has it left me bitter? Probably. Have I answered your question? Yes. See you!
