The cornea is a part of the body that absorbs oxygen from the atmosphere rather than through transportation in blood (There are no blood vessels in the cornea). If you sleep in contact lenses, not only are your lids closed, but a contact lens in aswell will cause a large reduction of oxygen to the cornea and can cause vascularisation - the slow ingrowth of blood vessels to the cornea which can eventually cause a reduction in the visual acuity. Also, during sleep, there is a fair amount of movement of the eye during REM sleep, and contact lenses have been known to abrade the cornea - although NO contact lens can slip behind the eye and damage the optic nerve (There is a structure called the conjunctival fornix and orbital septum that prevent objects going right behind the eye). The new silicon hydro-gel contact lenses (made by many manufacturers) are designed to increase oxygen transmission and hydration and can be prescribed to wear overnight providing the optician is happy with the health of the eyes - even these lenses though may still feel uncomfortable in the morning despite them not actually harming the eye.

They can get dried out and crinkly, which in turn may hurt your eyes. At the very least they'll be uncomfortable, and may even shift particularly if you rub your eyes in your sleep. Nothing worse than waking up and feeling a contact lens trapped behind your eyeball!
Fortunately I had lasik done a few years ago, so I don't worry about that prob so much....

If you sleep in your contacts they will dry your eyes out. Also, you can get an eye infection by leaving them in over night. Good Luck!

They don't allow as much air in as overnight contacts. If you can't take them out, It won't kill you but it isn't great for your eyes.

Your contact lenses will dry up and you'll have difficulty removing them later. Even if you do manage to remove them, they will scratch your eyes and make you more prone to eye infections.
