On one hand you are not communicating with your voice, on the other hand if you are deaf this is a perfect way for you to communicate, it is social but not in your face. You can also help a lot of people. This way you can find out more answers than if you were to go onto the street and ask complete strangers these questions, you can be intimidated. This way you can be comfortable in asking these questions and all be heard.
Also written communication dates back to cave men writing on walls to let other tribes know how well he's done and stories of the hunting, etc.
Also writing a letter to random people and hoping to hear back is too slow. Or practical.

Yahoo is an open line of communication. You come here and hear from people all over the world. You get advice, some good and some not so good then go on with your life. Sometimes the answers help and sometimes they are just entertaining. Maybe it has helped someone and they can use it in their life.

Not Y!A by itself. As any other tool, we can use it to do good things and to waste our lives.
If by "proper communication" you mean that here the most common thing to see is a very low quality of language... well... it is how you see it out there. Internet is not incentivating the degradation process. It is giving them a pretext. But the process is already there.

proper communication? that term would have to have a situational definition. I don't think so. I think that it is a tool that people can use to gain input from others who they would not have ever had the means of metting otherwise. everything in moderation...

I don't think it's deliberate, it's just that you'll have lots of folks using it for no better reason than to score 2 pts., or insult folks with poorly written, text-msg-inspired drivel like "u r SO retarded", etc. But used thoughtfully and constructively, I think it has the potential to educate, enlighten, and entertain.

that's the cynical way to look at it. I look at it as a way for individuals the world over to communicate and share ideas with each other.
If you do not like Y answers, then don't use it.
