survival is a basic instinct-- you just know. when your stomach growls, you automatically reach out for something, because you were used to "eating" while still in your mother's womb. it's how some people learn to eat strange things, depending on where they come from: they got hungry and reached out for what seemed like edible at the time of hunger, probably liked its taste, probably proved to be edible because they didnt die from eating it, and thus, the cycle went--

It didn't. It just ate. Nothing really knows it has to survive. In fact, nothing really has to survive and nothing really does. Things are just changing and eating is a big part of that process. The whole survival thing is just one way of looking at it. You could probably look at it as things really just want to die as easily. I mean it wasn't me that said life is pain, so ... doesn't death "cure" life?

Strolling around one day, it came across a menu outside a resturaunt.
All its friends had dies just minutes ago, no one could figure out why. Anyway, with nothing to do, the first critter went in to the restaurant and found that it was an all you can eat buffet.
They figured it out from that.

Instinct mainly.
Assuming the first living thing to need to eat traditionally with it's mouth instead of absorbing nutrients, it more than likely would have had an uncontrollable urge to put something in it's mouth that appealed to it's sense of smell.
