I think you would have to share with me the passage in the Old Testament that you're referring to. However, this is what I do know about "violence" from God. Often in the Old Testament, God's violent side was due to his holy Justice. If someone raped a child in your neighborhood, wouldn't you expect justice? God could n't truely be loving without also be just. Many instances of violence in the bible are due to justice. However, like I said... it's hard for me to give you a good answer without looking at the particular scripture that you're referring to.

When you have a single God then that God has to reflect the totality of human nature. The love, the creative and also the hate and the destructive.
Any religion that worships a single God and insists their God reflects only one side of human nature is denying their own true aspect. This path, at best, leads to psychosis; at worst it leads to genocide.
In actual answer to your question; the Old Testament reflects the knowledge that a single God must encompass all of humanities passions.
This latest fad that a single God can purely represent 'good' is as false as a politican claiming to be a Christian and then condoning war. The two are simply incompatible.

Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them, '"As I am alive," is the utterance of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, "I take delight, not in the death of the wicked one, but in that someone wicked turns back from his way and actually keeps living. Turn back, turn back from your bad ways, for why is it that you should die, O house of Israel?"'
Acts 17:30 True, God has overlooked the times of such ignorance, yet NOW he is telling mankind that they should all everywhere repent.
31) Because he has set a day (1,000 year reign/ The Lord's Day) in which he purposes to judge the inhabited earth in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and he has furnished a guarantee to all men in the he has resurrected him form the dead.
Love for the righteous, and the sanctification of God's name in the Universe, includes death for the unrepentant.
Praise Jehovah the God of the Universe!!
Hail earth's new King of the Universe..Jesus!!
Welcome his wife, the Queen of the Universe!!

The new testament releases us all from the old. If one wrote Christ into the koran as the son of God and saviour of man kind (as is the truth), such words would become the new testament of the Koran as well . The day may come when they see the light and do it .

Humanity is evolving. When the Old Testament was written, society was in it's infancy or childhood. Society was immature. Society has matured a little but not much. Hopefully we will get to the point where we can realize our true potential before we annihilate ourselved.

God Himself, said that "I am a jealous God...."
with that, you have to understand that He does not get jealous as we do, but rather informs His people to NOT worship other gods or idols.
God said He would destroy the earth with a flood and He did. He said He would destroy a couple of cities with fire and turn anyone who watched to a pillar of salt and He did.
nope, the Big Guy is not just love and kindness. He is loving but vengful according to His works and His word.

God is God and he does what he must do. He is our Creator, our Father and as our father he must chasten us because we are unruly children. When a child or an entire household gets out of control, a father must take drastic measure to restore order. God is a God of order, not chaos. What we see as violence, God sees as discipline. God does not think as we think. God's mind operates on a much higher level than our minds do. We see life day to day, but God views the entire universe at a single glance. We cannot compare the operation of God's mind with our own because our minds are so small and his mind is so great.

That's why Jesus Christ came along. Jesus brought us salvation and died for our sins so that we may have eternal life. Jesus taught that He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End; we shouldn't completely dismiss the Old Testament, but Jesus brought us a new message and a new way to live by. To love and to cherish peace, not violence. If struck on one cheek, turn the other etc

The Bible is full of violence. It tells the story of the time when people could only claim or conquer land by violence. It is still happening today and will never change while greed rules the world.

I can't really understand what you're asking here but I'll answer what I think you're asking. Why is god seemingly more violent in the old testament?
God had to phsically protect the kingly line of Israel starting with Abraham, so that his promise of a seed to save mankind (who was ultimatley Jesus) would come true.
Feel free to e-mail me if that wasn't quite what you were asking.
