They are just bullshitting us. If the plane start to crash there is no way to survive with that floating jacket. I know there is a high speed and very cold up there in the sky but it will be better with parachutes, because there are some chances for example the captain see that there is no way to survive airplane, he can slow down the speed and the highness so the passenger can jump. You don't have to be such a expert to use the parachute.

It is hard enough to get out of an airliner on the ground when the plane is standing still at the gate now imagine 300 panicked idiots that did not listen to the flight attendant's briefing trying to figure out how to use a parachute for the first time then imagine that the airplane is moving around tossing you up and down and back and front now we come to the fact that in a pressurized aircraft you can not open the doors until it is depressurized oh yeah and you are flying at 400 MPH hope you don't hit the tail or get sucked into an engine on your way out. More people would die attempting to exit the aircraft than if they rode it in during an emergency landing!!!!

Passenger aircrafts fly at altitudes where there is hardly any or very low pressure. Hence at such altitudes the need to eject out of the craft would invite instant death. If you open the pressurized cabin of the aircraft, the pressure differential will decompress the lungs causing instant death and will suck the bodies out.
Generally speaking most of the aircraft failures happen either at take off or on landing. Hence in case of an emergency landing on water flotation device comes handy. Failure on cruising altitude other than body failure (which will be fatal) will only force the aircraft to land. Moreover ejecting from the aircraft at safe altitudes also require design changes which may be possible but may not be cost effective.

Because parachutes dont float as well as lifejackets....
You need to be trained how to use a parachute properly. The canopy needs to be inspected and repacked every so often if not used.
People in general are stupid, could you imagine 200+ trying to evacuate a jumbo jet to bail out?? They can barely handle dropping in on the emrgency slide of a 747. It wouldnt work.

That would not make any difference. (a) without any training you would not be able to operate a parachute to land safely. (b) a crashing airplane falls at a very high speet and if you would jump out, chances of not hitting the wing or the turbines are very low; and (c) you will never be able to clear the plane befor it hits the ground (for several reasons)

Also consider how you would get 300 panicked people out 3 exits in the small window of time between being at a low enough altitude to have sufficient pressure to breathe and too low to safely deploy a parachute (which they probably couldn't figure out anyway). Plus, half of them would probably kill themselves on the landing.

all answers above, they are picturing on "sky diving," and yeah, they are right. Can't sky dive from Boeing-777 going 500+mph at alt of 30,000ft.
Though, ejection-seat is possible. Have you seeing "Die Hard 2"? How Bruce Wills servived when he trapped in a large cargo-airplane on the ground? It will shoot you high enough from ground and parachute opens automatically.
Then why don't they equip ejection-seats in all commercial airplanes? Because it will be heck expensive. Airplane is the safest transportation, and spending money for ejection seats and modifying sealing, testing, etc is like buying a flood damage insurance for a house on top of mountain.

The speed at which large jets travel, even in a stall, is too fast to jump from. To be slow enough to jump, and it is falling like a brick. The floating seat cushions, not jackets, are for a crash in the water.
