OK...the question is not HOW do people become, or stay poor, but rather WHY they suffer.
Not all poor people do suffer. Some people are poor by monetary standards, but rich in life-fulfillment and sustanence.
I think the majority of poor people are lacking basic necessities and do suffer. Lack of heat in Winter, healthy food, medical care, reliable tranportation, clothing, bedding, etc. contribute to this.
Dysfuntional families and drug abuse are found within both rich and poor societies, yet it can become an overwhelming burden in addition to the above problems for those that are poor. Also, I believe these things feed upon each other and can rapidly spiral downward.
Government programs seem to be of very marginal benefit in most cases.

From the very beginning, the poor were disadvantaged by those that could stoop to help, but their attitude was "I got mine so now let them get theirs" The fact that they would hinder the poor or less forninate to their assumed advantage, is exactly what holds them back from their full potential, because you need to keep a foot on someones neck to contiually hold them down, so to speak. Also some of the poor are easily discouraged, laughed at in school ( maybe because of their clothing ) Then the desire to improve their lot is diminished and thrown a wet blanket. Even the so called professionals, like teachers and clergy are no great help and shun the poor. Then like the rest of the population, a percentage are just lazy and poor in character as well!

I was homeless once in California. I had just gotten my college degree and had hit upon some bad luck. When I ended up in California. Now I tried everything to get a job but the market was tight. A lot of things in California is knowing someone to get into a job. And no I didn't want to be an actor or muscian. I have a perfectly good business degree. I applied for Mc Donald but they told me point blank I was too qualified for the job. Even as I told them I need this job to live or soon I wouldn't have any place to live. I tried retail stores, day work, janitorial because I had once worked as a janitor. I tried Security because at the time I had my PERT.
I actually had to go to the salvation army, tells you how young I was then, and even they had a hard time finding anything. They told me I had two big problems one I had a degree which put me out of most of their training and I was American. Dreams of ripping my B.S. into a million pieces started to form. I was also having to defer my loan for college. I wanted to mail them my B.S. and say take it back just get off my back about the money. Sometime people can be cruel like spitting on a sandwich before giving it to you. It's easy to adapt to the life style after awhile. What you have to always balance is not getting the street on you. Would you hire an obviously smelly person.
Then there is that pesky address that you need to have to get a job, which you would have if you had a job. I worked hard telling jokes on the street, dancing, juggling, carrying heavy bags for people. Being a tour guide you name it and you'd find me there doing it. I never did sexual favors but I knew people who did.
I never stole but I knew people who did and there is a temptation when you are hungry to do it. After a while even your clothes tend to fall into disrepair. This is when you become unhireable and I tried hard not to let that happen.

Because they are lazy.
If someone is actually disabled that is one thing. But a healthy able body person is capable of working. If they are working, they are contributing to society. They are not sitting around feeling sorry for themselves. You get out of life what you put in it.
