You are asking the wrong people mate, you shld contact the sony service centre and talk to them, they'll be the best help you can get. Dont ask yahoo answers, it will ruin your tv.

Call Sony service centre, it is available in almost every city in the world, whts a world without sony? no world i guess....its a sony.

Has the set been dropped or otherwise physically mishanded, or perhaps a power surge since the last time it functioned normally? It sounds like internal circuitry has been damaged. See the links below for some tips on what it could be. Printing out that list and taking it to Sony (if it's under warranty) along with the TV, and/or taking it to a TV repair shop in your region would be the next step.

Could you edit your question and include whether any LED's flash?

I do have some idea what it may be, but it is to complected to discus here. Suggest you call a competent firm to look at it. Be care full there's a lot of cowboys out there. Maybe someone like Mastercare a national organisation. I must add it may be expensive, so if it is an old T/V It may be better to replace it. The price of new T/Vs are coming down all the time. ok here is the RIGHT answer from somone who has worked on many sonys, unlike the other shmucks. that high pitched squealing you hear is the switch mode power supply running, the reason it is squealing is because there is a shorted on one of its secondary lines. this could be many things. it could be a rectifier diode for any given secondary voltage line or shorted horizontal output transistor. If I could see the set myself I would be able to tell you within 15 min whats exactly wrong but what I said before is a good place to look. anway you are probably looking at $150 to $200 (at least for me) to repair that set.

This sounds too easy, but you should adjust the contrast and brightness. If you already tried that, go to a TV repar shop or call tech support.

This rig will usually have Scart connectors, possibly two. Makes sure the are both well seated, otherwise they can cause the problems you outline
