Well, my Mother didn't adopt a special needs child, but she took care of one for a while through Easter Seals.
Andrew was 5 and had cerebral palsy. His Mother didn't believe he had any potential at all but with my Mother, he blossomed!
Unfortunately, after my Mother's time with ES was up, so unfortunately was her time with Andrew.
(This was after at least a year.)
We had brought him to a great place and brought him into a perfect schedule and routine - crucial for him, we had shown him devoted care and love, my Mother had taught him how to use the toilet - a big step - she had to hold him up, but he was doing something nobody thought he would ever do and that was a big step.
With my Mother, Andrew could do anything.
After ES - his own Mother tried to put him in public school and they weren't so careful about his needs.
Last I heard, he was in a public school and someone wheeled him to the bathroom and put him on the toilet and left him there.
He fell off.
We can't do anything about it.
It makes me cry.

My oldest daughter is adopted at age 2 1/2. We had her in foster care for a year before she was freed for adoption. I have been lucky that due to my profession I have been able to monitor her development and stay on top of things. She has received Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. In kindergarten she was diagnosed with an auditory processing delay and ADHD/ODD. We have since taken her to a specialist and discovered she most likely has bipolar disorder (which is one of her birth mother's issues). It has been tough the last year and a half, but we are finally starting to see some progress. I have been fortunate that her teachers have been willing to work with us. My advice is learn the system and your child's educational rights, and if needed you can contact a parent advocate to help when problems arise in the educational domain. Good luck.
