People are so uptight because they realize we are headed for Orwell's '1984'. George Soros, Michael Moore, moveon.org, and the radical left have taken over of the Democratic Party and are positioning their candidate, Hillary Clinton, to assume power in 2008. They plan then to vastly increase the size of the State to monitor and control every citizen's actions, as in '1984'. This prospect is terrifying.
The radical leftists are building on three key victories. Their first victory was the control of the media. The media used to be objective but now it parrots the leftist party line. It has experimented successfully with disinformation (Rathergate, fake photos, etc.). Please recall that one of the cornerstones of '1984' was a news media that constantly doctored the news.
The second great victory of the radical left was the suppression of free speech. That has happened. We have allowed narrow self-interest groups to bully us for decades so that people are now afraid to speak out for fear of offending someone or being called a racist. What began as noble efforts- civil rights and women's rights- has spun madly out of control. Normal speech in the 1970's became barely acceptable speech in the '80's, politically incorrect speech in the '90's and now is called hate speech. Soon vast areas of speech and actions will become illegal, and after 2008 will be closely monitored and controlled, as in '1984'.
The third great victory of the radical left was the engineering of America's military defeat in Vietnam, and their efforts today to undermine America's war effort against Islamofascism. For although we are at war with Islamofascists, we cannot say anything bad about them. Our law enforcement cannot profile them to search for them, or share information to learn more about them. We cannot tap their telephones, even if they are outside the US. We cannot hold them in Guantanamo or other places, nor put them in front of military tribunals. We cannot shoot them without their permission. They have more rights than average Americans! Every move to destroy these vicious, immoral enemies brings screams of protest from the left that we are violating their rights. Our efforts to protect ourselves are portrayed as an unacceptable encroachment on our freedoms.
Through these three efforts: media, monitoring, and military, the radical left is seeking to destroy the United States of America. They are poised to replace it with a Communist style dictatorship government where every citizen's actions will be monitored and controlled by an all-powerful State. We are careening madly towards '1984', and we seem powerless to stop it. That is why people are so uptight.

Here's the deal. The people who are the easiliest offended are those who have some nasty, raunchy, unthinkable stuff in their past. Its really true. I know many of them. Its like they are paying penance for all the dirt they have done and shun those who are not perfect. Most people like that should remember where they came from and stop turning thei rnoses up at those of us who have not "arrived."

Because this world is so full of hate-mongers that you can't really let yourself go for even a few minutes. Not even among your friends and family. One minute everything's fine, the next your words are being misconstrued to mean something you don't feel or believe.
